This article delves into these critical updates, offering insights for coaches to maintain the highest safety standards.

Cheer Coaching Certification

Updated Safety Guidelines:

The USASF continually revises its rules and guidelines, prioritizing safety, skill progression, and fair play. This year’s adjustments are no exception, with a focus on creating a consistent and safe environment for cheer athletes at both events and practices. Coaches must familiarize themselves with these changes to ensure their teams comply with the latest safety protocols.

Importance of Coach Credentialing:

The USASF’s reinforced rules and safety guidelines are augmented by a robust coach credentialing process. This certification ensures that cheer coaches are proficient in teaching appropriate skill progressions. It’s not just about knowing the routines but understanding how to execute them safely. The certification equips coaches with the knowledge to enforce safety rules effectively, a crucial aspect in a sport where precision and safety are intertwined.

Safety Judge Certification:

Beyond coaching credentials, the USASF also offers safety judge certification. These certified judges play a pivotal role in maintaining safety standards during competitions. They are armed with the latest resources and knowledge to ensure compliance with safety rules, providing an additional layer of safety for athletes.

Adapting to New Safety Standards:

For cheerleading coaches, adapting to these updated guidelines and obtaining the necessary certifications is not just a regulatory requirement but a moral obligation. It speaks volumes about a coach’s dedication to their athletes’ safety and well-being. This year’s focus on safety is a reminder that the sport is continually evolving, and so must our approaches to coaching and care.

The 2023 updates to cheerleading safety guidelines and coaching certifications are pivotal in ensuring the sport’s integrity and the safety of its participants. As coaches, understanding and implementing these changes is crucial. By staying informed and certified, coaches not only comply with regulations but also demonstrate their commitment to fostering a safe and positive environment for their athletes.

Monica Aldama, the renowned coach of the Navarro College cheerleading team, has announced her retirement, marking the end of an illustrious career that redefined cheerleading at the collegiate level. Aldama’s journey with Navarro College, her contributions to the sport, and the controversies that surrounded her tenure offer a compelling narrative of triumph, challenge, and transformation in the world of competitive cheerleading.

Monica Aldama: A Legacy in Cheerleading

Alright, let’s dive into Monica Aldama’s incredible journey in cheerleading. Think about this: she steps in as the coach of the Navarro College cheer team in the late ’90s, and what she does next is nothing short of remarkable.

Imagine taking a team and not just making it good, but turning it into a national sensation, a real powerhouse in the world of cheerleading. That’s exactly what Aldama did. Under her guidance, Navarro College became a name synonymous with excellence in cheerleading. It’s like she had the Midas touch, but for cheer routines!

Now, let’s talk numbers because they’re just mind-blowing. Seventeen National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) National Championships in the Advanced Large Co-Ed Division. That’s not just winning; that’s dominating. And six “Grand National” Championships! Think about it — her teams weren’t just beating other community colleges; they were outscoring the big guns, the NCAA Division I teams. That’s like a David and Goliath story, but David keeps winning year after year.

What’s really cool about Aldama’s legacy is how she changed the game. It wasn’t just about the physical aspects of cheerleading, the stunts, and the routines. She brought in this level of strategy, precision, and team spirit that elevated the whole sport. It’s like she looked at cheerleading and said, “Let’s take this to the next level.”

Her impact goes beyond just the trophies and the titles. She inspired a generation of cheerleaders and coaches. With Aldama at the helm, Navarro cheerleaders knew they weren’t just part of a team; they were part of a legacy. That’s a powerful thing. It’s about building something that lasts, something that others look up to and aspire to be a part of.

So, the year 2000 was a big one for them. They didn’t just win at the NCA College Nationals; they smashed records. We’re talking an all-time high score kind of smashing. That’s like hitting a home run in the bottom of the ninth in the World Series, but in cheerleading. It was a huge moment and really put them on the map in a big way.

Rise to National Prominence

Monica Aldama and her Navarro cheer squad, they were something else. You know how some teams are just good, and then there are those that are like a force of nature? That was them under Aldama’s leadership.

And Aldama, well, she wasn’t just a coach. She was a builder of champions. Her approach, her dedication, it wasn’t just about creating a winning team for a season. She was all about setting this incredibly high standard that would last. It’s like she had this recipe for success, and she kept refining it year after year.

Her impact was so huge that in 2019, she was inducted into the Navarro College Athletics Hall of Fame. That’s a big honor, you know. It’s like the college saying, “You’re not just a part of our history; you helped write it.” For Aldama, it was a recognition of not just the titles and the trophies, but of the legacy she was building in cheerleading. She wasn’t just a coach at that point; she was a legend in the sport.

So, yeah, the rise of Navarro under Aldama was something special. They didn’t just win; they set the bar. And that kind of excellence, it resonates. It inspires. It’s like they were showing what’s possible when you mix talent, hard work, and a bit of that Aldama magic.

“Cheer” – A Pop-Culture Phenomenon

Now let’s talk about “Cheer!” You know, before this Netflix docuseries hit the screens in 2020, most people didn’t really get a behind-the-scenes look at competitive cheerleading. But “Cheer” changed all that. It was like suddenly flipping on a light in a room that most of the world didn’t even know existed.

This show wasn’t just about stunts and pom-poms. It dove deep into the blood, sweat, and tears that go into those routines. Monica Aldama and her Navarro cheer team, they were the stars of this show. It gave us a glimpse of their world – the intense training, the dedication, and the sheer willpower it takes to be at the top of this sport. We’re talking about grueling practices, personal sacrifices, and a kind of team spirit that’s really more like a family.

And Monica Aldama, she wasn’t just a coach on this show. She came off as a mentor, a mother figure, and a tough-love giver all rolled into one. Viewers got to see how her leadership and passion were key ingredients in the team’s success. It was inspiring, really.

The impact of “Cheer”? Huge. I mean, Aldama and her team went from being champions in the cheer world to becoming household names. They were on talk shows like Good Morning America and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Imagine going from cheering on the sidelines to being the one everyone’s cheering for on national TV!

And then Aldama on “Dancing with the Stars”? That was like the cherry on top. She took her competitive spirit from the gym mat to the dance floor, showing a whole new audience her talent and charisma. It’s one thing to coach athletes to be their best, but it’s another to put yourself out there and compete in a totally different arena.

So, “Cheer” was more than just a docuseries. It was a cultural phenomenon that put cheerleading in the spotlight, showed the world the real deal about this sport, and turned Monica Aldama and her Navarro team into icons. It’s amazing how a show can not only entertain but also change perceptions and bring well-deserved recognition to a sport and its athletes.

Challenges and Controversies

Monica Aldama’s time as the coach of Navarro College’s cheerleading team was quite a rollercoaster, you know. It wasn’t all just about winning championships and Netflix fame. The world of cheerleading, especially at the elite level where Navarro competed, came under a lot of scrutiny, and Aldama’s team was right in the middle of it.

First off, there was this major shockwave sent through the cheer world with the Jerry Harris case. Harris, a former member of Aldama’s Navarro cheerleading squad, got into serious legal trouble for soliciting sex from minors. This was a huge deal because it raised a lot of questions about safety and oversight in cheer programs. I mean, here was this rising star in cheerleading, featured on a popular Netflix show, and suddenly he’s in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It really shook the community and undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on Aldama as the coach.

Then, there’s this whole lawsuit saga. A former cheerleader at Navarro brought up some pretty serious allegations against Aldama, accusing her of covering up a sexual assault case. That’s a heavy accusation, right? And it’s not just about Aldama herself, but it also puts the spotlight on how these kinds of situations are handled in cheerleading programs. Navarro College, where Aldama coached, flat-out denied any wrongdoing, but the lawsuit did highlight something important. It showed that maybe there’s a need for stronger measures to protect athletes in cheerleading, to make sure their well-being is always top priority.

So yeah, while Aldama’s career had its high points, it also had these significant challenges. They kind of serve as a reminder that even in something as spirited and competitive as cheerleading, there are serious issues that need attention. It’s not just about the glitz and the trophies; there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that we need to think about.

These incidents not only tested her leadership but also brought to light the complexities of managing a high-profile athletic program.

The Allegations and Legal Challenges

The legal challenges Aldama faced were significant. In May 2023, a former cheerleader from Navarro College filed a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and a cover-up of sexual assault. The lawsuit accused Aldama of discouraging the cheerleader from reporting a sexual assault incident. This lawsuit, along with other issues, led to Aldama’s temporary suspension from USA Cheer, the national governing body for sport cheering in the United States.

Aldama’s Public Defense

Aldama’s response to these challenges was both public and assertive. She took to various platforms, including social media, to defend herself against the allegations. Aldama criticized the investigation process, pointing out what she perceived as flaws and a lack of communication. Her defense was not just verbal; she indicated her readiness to present substantial evidence, including surveillance videos, text messages, and emails, to support her narrative and refute the allegations.

Dismissal of the Lawsuit and Closure of the Complaint

The turning point in these legal battles came when the civil lawsuit against Aldama was dismissed. Additionally, the complaint lodged against her by USA Cheer was also closed. This closure marked a significant moment in Aldama’s career, as it allowed her to move past these allegations and focus on her legacy and future endeavors. Aldama’s public statements following the dismissal of the lawsuit and the closure of the complaint were of relief and vindication, indicating a desire to move forward from these controversies.

Reflection on the Impact of Legal Challenges

These legal battles and public statements highlight a crucial aspect of Aldama’s career. They underscore the complexities and pressures of leading a high-profile athletic program. Aldama’s situation illustrates how coaches in the limelight must navigate not only the challenges of training and competition but also legal and ethical issues that can arise. Her ability to withstand these pressures, defend her reputation, and ultimately see the allegations dismissed speaks to her resilience and commitment to her role as a coach and leader.

Monica Aldama’s response to the legal battles and controversies she faced was a testament to her strength and determination to protect her reputation and legacy. While these challenges were undoubtedly a difficult part of her career, her ability to confront and overcome them adds a complex but essential layer to her story as one of the most influential figures in the world of competitive cheerleading. As she retires, these experiences form a significant part of her narrative, shaping how she is remembered in the cheerleading community and beyond.

Aldama’s Enduring Impact

Aldama’s retirement signifies the end of an era for Navarro College’s cheer program. Her impact on the sport, marked by her dedication to building a world-class team and fostering a championship mindset, leaves an indelible mark on cheerleading.

Monica Aldama’s career at Navarro College stands as a testament to her commitment to excellence in cheerleading. Her ability to create a championship-caliber team, navigate the challenges of newfound fame, and address the controversies head-on demonstrates her resilience and dedication to the sport. As she steps down, her legacy continues to inspire future generations of cheerleaders and coaches, emphasizing the importance of leadership, integrity, and excellence in competitive cheerleading.

The Throw: The Physics of Cheerleading Lifts and Practical Training Techniques

The Throw The Physics of Cheerleading Lifts and Practical Training Techniques tips

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 17, 2023

The captivating moment when a cheerleader is launched into the air during a stunt is the result of a precise application of physics principles between the base and the flyer. Understanding the mechanics behind this can vastly improve technique, safety, and performance. This article dives deep into the physics of the cheerleading throw and offers practical methods for coaches to enhance the training of their athletes.

The Fundamentals of Physics in Cheer Throws

Before delving into the training methods, it’s crucial to comprehend the basic physics at play. The throw involves concepts of force, energy, momentum, and angular momentum. Here, we’ll break down these principles and explain how they work in unison to execute a flawless lift.

physics of cheerleading

Optimizing Force and Energy Transfer

The success of a throw hinges on the efficient transfer of energy from the base to the flyer. We will discuss how bases can optimize their application of force to maximize the height and stability of the throw, focusing on the timing, angle, and the explosive power needed.

The Technique Behind Momentum

Momentum is the product of mass and velocity and is conserved in the closed system of a base and flyer. Coaches can use drills to teach bases how to effectively transfer linear momentum to the flyer, ensuring a vertical lift that makes for an impressive stunt.

The spectacle of a cheerleader soaring gracefully through the air is a testament to the strength, timing, and precision cultivated through rigorous training. Strength and conditioning, drill repetition, and the correct application of force are the pillars of an effective cheer throw. This article will expand on these components to provide a comprehensive guide for cheerleading coaches aiming to refine the explosive power and synchronicity of their squad’s lifts.

Building a Foundation with Strength and Conditioning

The prowess of a cheerleading base begins with a robust foundation of physical strength, particularly in the legs and core. This is crucial for two reasons: it provides the power needed for a strong lift-off and ensures the stability required to support and control the throw. Here are key exercises to incorporate into a cheerleader’s regimen:

  • Squats and Deadlifts: These compound movements are excellent for building leg strength. They mimic the lifting action of a cheer throw, engaging the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles.
  • Plyometrics: Exercises like box jumps and jump squats train fast-twitch muscle fibers, essential for the explosive power needed in a lift-off.
  • Core Workouts: Planks, Russian twists, and hanging leg raises build the core stability that bases need to maintain balance and control during a throw.

Perfecting the Art through Drill Repetition

Drill repetition is about creating muscle memory so that each movement becomes second nature, allowing for flawless execution during the high pressure of performances. Repetitive practice drills that focus on timing and coordination are vital:

  • Simulated Throws: Practice the motion of throws without the flyer to perfect the base’s technique and build endurance.
  • Timing Drills: Use metronomes or music to cue bases on when to initiate and release the throw, training them to act in unison.
  • Coordination Exercises: Group exercises where bases lift objects in sync can improve the collective coordination needed for synchronized throws.
angular momentum cheerleading

The Science of Force Application

Teaching bases how to uniformly and directionally apply force can make the difference between a mediocre and a spectacular stunt. The uniform application of force ensures the flyer’s safety and the stunt’s success. Here are strategies to enhance this skill:

improve cheer technique
  • Directional Drills: Use targeted exercises to train bases on applying force in a consistent direction, which is often vertical for maximum height.
  • Resistance Training: Implement resistance bands or light weights to simulate the resistance a base feels when lifting a flyer.
  • Consistent Practice with Flyers: There’s no substitute for the real thing. Regular practice with flyers allows bases to adjust their force application in real-time, attuning to the flyer’s weight and movement dynamics.

Integrating Training into Routine Workouts

Incorporating these elements into a routine workout can lead to significant improvements:

  • Circuit Training: Create a circuit that includes leg and core strength exercises, plyometrics, and drill repetitions for a comprehensive workout.
  • Progressive Overload: Gradually increase the intensity and complexity of exercises to continuously challenge the athletes and promote strength gains.
  • Recovery and Mobility: Incorporate adequate rest and mobility work to prevent injury and ensure that athletes can perform movements with full range of motion.

Safety First: Ensuring a Secure Practice Environment

No discussion of cheerleading technique would be complete without a strong emphasis on safety. This section will cover the essential safety measures coaches must enforce, from proper spotting to ensuring that all stunts are practiced with mats and in a suitable environment.

Cheerleading throws are a complex blend of artistry and physics. By applying these principles in a structured training regimen, coaches can elevate their athletes’ performance and safety. This article serves as a guide to the scientific and practical aspects of cheerleading throws, providing coaches with the knowledge and tools to refine their team’s stunts to perfection.

  • Pulsar Music Player: This app shines across Android, iOS, and Chrome, boasting a user-friendly interface and reliable offline playback that make it a top pick for coaches on-the-go.
  • GoneMAD Music Player: Exclusive to Android, GoneMAD is celebrated for its customizable nature and audio enhancements, making it ideal for those seeking a personalized music experience.
  • AIMP: Known for supporting a multitude of audio formats, AIMP is an Android favorite for coaches who require flexibility and no-fuss access to their curated playlists.
  • Poweramp Music Player: With its high-level customization and powerful audio features, Poweramp for Android ensures that every beat of your cheer mix is heard loud and clear.

Switching to iOS, the selection is just as impressive:

  • VOX – MP3 & FLAC Music Player: VOX stands out with its support for high-resolution audio, ensuring that every cheer routine is accompanied by crystal-clear sound.
  • Cs Music Player: Tapping into the Apple Music ecosystem, Cs Music Player offers a minimalist and efficient way to manage and play your already-amassed collection, both from local storage and the iCloud Music Library.

These apps are more than just tools; they’re the backstage heroes ensuring every jump, stunt, and tumble is performed in perfect harmony with the music.

Best Practices for Device Handoff

A smooth handoff of your device to the sound engineer is critical. Here are some refined practices to ensure your team’s performance sounds as good as it looks:

  • Pre-Event Preparation: Rigorous preparation is key. Besides disabling notifications and downloading music, consider a rehearsal run to ensure tracks play in the correct order. Equip your device with a durable case for protection and an ample battery pack to guard against power drain.
  • Connectivity: In addition to disabling Wi-Fi and data, consider placing the device in airplane mode with Bluetooth disabled to prevent any wireless interruptions. Ensure that all music files are properly tagged and organized for easy navigation.
  • Sound Quality: If possible, try to conduct a sound check with the engineering team to test levels. Having a high-quality DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) adapter can further enhance the sound fidelity.
  • Security: Beyond locking the device to a single app, ensure that the screen timeout is extended or disabled to prevent the device from locking during performance. Use features like Guided Access on iOS or Screen Pinning on Android to lock the device into the music app, preventing accidental swipes or taps.
iOS music apps cheer

Following these practices will minimize technical glitches and secure a performance that is as flawless technically as it is athletically.

Advantages of Using an MP3 Player

While smartphones have become the Swiss Army knife of technology, MP3 players still hold their ground, especially in scenarios demanding uninterrupted audio play, such as cheer competitions.

cheer competition music
  • Dedicated Use: MP3 players offer a single-use focus that smartphones can’t match. They are designed for one thing and one thing only: playing music. This specialization means there’s no risk of a surprise call or text popping up and disrupting a critical moment in a performance.
  • Battery Longevity: Unlike smartphones, which juggle countless tasks and apps, MP3 players are battery misers. They are built to last much longer on a single charge, ensuring that the device won’t die just as the team hits the mat.
  • User-Friendly Interfaces: The simplicity of MP3 players is their hidden strength. In the high-stakes environment of a cheer competition, the last thing a coach needs is to fumble through complex menus. MP3 players usually offer straightforward navigation that can be a lifesaver under pressure.
  • Universal Connectivity: The humble 3.5mm jack is nearly universal in MP3 players, which means virtually any sound system can interface with them without a hitch. This can be a boon in venues where the sound engineer’s setup might not be compatible with the various connectors of the latest smartphones.

In essence, an MP3 player is a coach’s reliable ally, ensuring that the music will play on cue, as planned, without any of the modern-day technological hiccups that can accompany a smartphone.

While mobile devices offer convenience, the distinct advantages of MP3 players make them a worthy consideration for any cheer coach looking to ensure a seamless performance. Optimizing Gym Workouts for Cheerleading Back Spots

Gym Workouts for Cheerleading Back Spots

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 14, 2023

Transitioning to the role of a back spot in cheerleading presents unique physical demands that go beyond general gym knowledge. Understanding the specific strength and conditioning needed can enhance performance and prevent injury. In this article, we explore targeted exercises that align with the skills required for back spotting, ensuring you’re not only gym-strong but also mat-ready.

Body:

The Role of a Back Spot:

A back spot is pivotal for the stability and safety of stunts. While there are similarities with one-man stunting, including the need for upper body strength and coordination, the back spot’s role is distinct in its requirements for balance, timing, and the ability to support and lift flyers.

cheerleading back spot

Gym Exercises for Back Spots:

To prepare for this role, a comprehensive workout routine that includes the following exercises is recommended:

  • Pull Exercises:
    • Pull-Ups/Chin-Ups: These exercises strengthen the lats, biceps, and grip, which are essential for holding and lifting a flyer.
    • Rows: Both barbell and dumbbell rows will develop the back muscles necessary for maintaining stunt stability.
    • Deadlifts: They target the posterior chain, providing the foundational strength needed for lifting and supporting weight.
  • Core Stability Workouts:
    • Planks: To develop endurance in the core muscles.
    • Russian Twists: These will build rotational strength, important for adjusting and stabilizing stunts.
  • Leg Strength and Power:
    • Squats: Fundamental for developing leg strength to lift and support flyers from below.
    • Box Jumps: To enhance explosive power, which is vital for quick movements during stunts.

Balanced Training Approach:

Training as a back spot in cheerleading requires a well-rounded fitness regime that not only builds muscle but also promotes harmony and balance in the body. This means integrating a mix of push and pull exercises into your workout routine. Push exercises, like push-ups and overhead presses, develop the chest, shoulders, and triceps, which are crucial for motions like hand-offs and extensions. Pull exercises, on the other hand, such as those suggested in the commenter’s advice—like rows and pull-ups—strengthen the back, biceps, and forearms, essential for the act of catching and stabilizing flyers.

Why is this balance important? Overemphasis on push movements without adequate pull exercises can lead to muscle imbalances, which in turn may cause poor posture—rounded shoulders, a forward head position—and increase the risk of injuries due to overuse of certain muscle groups. A balanced approach ensures that opposing muscle groups are equally strong, promoting better posture and more effective force generation, which is essential when you’re the foundation of a stunt.

In addition to muscular balance, incorporating flexibility training into your regimen is non-negotiable. A back spot must have a full range of motion to perform the intricate movements required in cheerleading. Flexibility exercises, like dynamic stretching and yoga, can enhance muscle elasticity, which allows for deeper squats, higher lifts, and more controlled catches. These exercises also aid in recovery and help prevent injuries by allowing muscles to work more effectively.

gym training for cheer

The Backbone of Cheer Stunts:

As the backbone of cheer stunts, the back spot’s role is as much about power and precision as it is about being the central point of stability and safety. Your training should, therefore, reflect the multifaceted nature of your role. This means focusing on developing the raw strength needed to lift and support flyers but also the stability to manage dynamic movements and the nuanced ability to adjust to the flyer’s motion mid-air.

A comprehensive gym regimen for a back spot should simulate the demands of cheerleading. This could include exercises that mimic the movements of stunts, like weighted squats that replicate the lifting of a flyer, and balance training that helps you remain steady on your feet no matter what’s happening above you. By preparing your body to handle the various challenges of being a back spot, you’ll be ready to support your team in every lift and stunt, ensuring that each performance is executed with confidence and skill.

Regaining Your Flexibility for Cheer

Regaining Your Flexibility for Cheer A Comprehensive Guide

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 14, 2023

Many athletes find themselves in a common predicament—regaining lost flexibility. Flexibility is a cornerstone of cheerleading, essential for executing stunts, tumbling, and jumps with grace and precision. In this guide, we delve into targeted stretches and strategies to enhance your flexibility, focusing on hips and arms, ensuring you’re tryout-ready by March.

flexibility training

Understanding Flexibility in Cheerleading:

Flexibility in cheerleading is multifaceted; it encompasses more than the ability to stretch muscles. It’s about achieving optimal mobility—where muscles and joints work in unison to allow for complete, fluid movements that are essential in cheer routines.

Additionally, flexibility is deeply intertwined with strength; it’s not enough to merely be able to reach a position. A cheerleader must have the muscular strength to hold that position, perform it with control, and transition in and out of it with precision.

A high V or a heel stretch, for instance, isn’t solely about the ability to lift the leg high but also about the control and stability in the supporting leg, the strength in the core to maintain posture, and the arm strength to hold the pose. Similarly, when maintaining balance in scales and arabesques, a cheerleader must engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, ensuring that each movement is as deliberate as it is graceful.

The integration of flexibility and strength is what allows cheerleaders to perform with the athleticism and artistry that the sport demands. To achieve this, cheerleaders must focus on a holistic flexibility routine that not only increases the range of motion but also builds the strength and control needed to execute complex cheer movements effectively and safely.

Tailored Stretching Regimen:

To regain your flexibility, a structured routine is pivotal, one that progressively enhances your capacity for cheer-specific movements. Here’s a closer look at the essential stretches:

Bridges: An exemplary stretch for cheerleaders, bridges target spinal flexibility, which is a fundamental aspect of tumbling and performing backbends. When you practice bridges, you’re not only increasing the flexibility of your spine but also strengthening your back muscles. This dual benefit is crucial because a strong back enables you to safely perform a wide array of cheer motions, from back walkovers to layouts, reducing the risk of injury.

Splits (Front and Middle): Splits are a definitive stretch that test and improve the elasticity of your hip flexors, hamstrings, and adductors. Consistently practicing both front and middle splits ensures that you develop flexibility evenly on both sides of your body, which is essential for symmetry in cheerleading skills. This symmetry is important not just aesthetically but also functionally, as it allows for balanced force distribution during jumps and while performing stunts.

Pancake Stretch: A pancake stretch is an intensive stretch that has you sit on the ground with your legs spread wide and fold your torso forward. This deep forward fold engages your hamstrings and adductors significantly, which are muscle groups integral to high kicks, jumps, and various stunts. The stretch can help increase your range of motion, making your movements look more effortless and polished.

cheerleading stretches

In your routine, these stretches should be complemented with a warm-up to prepare your muscles, and possibly followed by a cool-down to aid recovery. A balanced approach to stretching not only enhances flexibility but also helps in injury prevention, ensuring that you can perform cheerleading routines with both vigor and longevity

Additional Stretching Tips:

  • For hip flexibility, consider pigeon poses and butterfly stretches.
  • Incorporate shoulder stretches and arm circles to enhance arm mobility.
  • Consistency is key. Stretch daily, holding each stretch for at least 30 seconds.
  • Warm up before stretching to prevent injuries.
  • Incorporate dynamic stretching to simulate cheer movements.

Regaining flexibility is a journey that requires dedication, consistency, and the right techniques. By incorporating these stretches and following a disciplined approach, you’ll see improvement in your flexibility, performance, and confidence at tryouts

These are the tales of the Ithaca College club team’s tenacious rise, Team Australia’s historic win at the ICU World Championships, and Bangkok University’s groundbreaking gold at a prestigious international competition. Each narrative unfolds a saga of resilience, creativity, and unwavering determination, painting a vivid picture of cheerleading’s underdog champions. Join us as we recount the journeys of those who have danced in the face of adversity and emerged victorious on cheerleading’s grandest stages

Ithaca College

The story of the Ithaca College cheerleading team embodies the true essence of an underdog’s journey in the competitive cheerleading arena. With no coach just before the preseason and limited resources as a club sports team, they faced an uphill battle. The cheerleaders had to rely on their determination and creativity to raise the $35,000 needed just to attend the National Cheerleaders Association collegiate cheer championship in Daytona.

Their coach, Alicia Trahan, was new to both Ithaca and the cheerleading scene at the college level. With her background in cheer from Baylor University, where she was a cheerleader on a varsity team, Alicia had to adapt quickly to the club sport environment where everything from practice clothes to competition fees required self-funding.

Despite these challenges, the team’s perseverance and unity were evident. They spent months perfecting their routine, with athletes like Rochelle MacNeil transitioning from base to flyer, facing and overcoming the daunting fear of flying. Emma Schaefer, another flyer, had to conquer her nerves to execute flawless flips during their routine. These personal battles were a microcosm of the team’s larger struggle, emblematic of the underdog spirit that drove them forward.

As the team prepared for their performance in Albany, they encountered further setbacks with injuries and last-minute lineup changes. Alicia’s decision to rest an injured cheerleader in anticipation of the main event in Daytona and to bring in a former team member, Alex Sprague, to fill in showed the agility and leadership necessary to navigate the tumultuous waters of competitive cheerleading. The adaptability and quick learning of athletes like Alex, who seamlessly integrated back into the team, underscored the resilience and resourcefulness characteristic of underdog teams.

In Albany, the Ithaca College cheerleading team’s performance, against all odds, was their best yet, culminating in a first-place victory that left the team in disbelief. Their win was a testament to their hard work, a well-deserved reward for their dedication and spirit. The team’s joyous celebration upon receiving the black banner reading “First Place” was a poignant moment, highlighting not only their triumph over adversity but also the unity and strength that had developed among them.

It’s not just about the stunts and the competitions; it’s about the journey, the struggles, and the collective heart of a team that refuses to give up, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The Ithaca College cheerleading team’s story is a powerful narrative of resilience and determination that serves as inspiration for any team facing long odds.

Team Australia

Team Australia’s cheerleading squads, comprised of the nation’s finest cheerleaders, made a historic mark at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida. The All Girl team from Australia was crowned WORLD CHAMPIONS, marking the first year Australia has ever won the ICU World Cheerleading Championship title. Their victory is a significant achievement, demonstrating Australia’s rise as a competitive force in a sport long dominated by the United States. The coed team also won a silver medal, further solidifying Australia’s status as global contenders.

What makes their victory even more remarkable is the preparation that went into it. The teams had only three training camp weekends in Australia and just three practice sessions the week before the competition in the USA. To not only put together a routine of such high caliber but also to execute it to a level worthy of top spots at Worlds is an extraordinary feat. Derrick Turner, the head coach of Team Australia – All Girl, expressed immense pride in achieving the goal of being crowned world champions. Eddie Davey, the head coach of Team Australia – Coed Elite, commended the athletes and coaches for reaching a level of excellence previously unseen in their country.

This story is a testament to the underdog spirit, showcasing that with hard work, unity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, even teams from smaller cheerleading communities can ascend to the top of the world stage. Team Australia’s victory will undoubtedly inspire cheerleaders around the globe and serve as a powerful example of what can be accomplished when teams dare to dream big and work tirelessly to turn those dreams into reality.

Bangkok University

The Bangkok University cheerleading team, an underdog group from Thailand, carved out their place in cheerleading history with a story that reads like a script from a feel-good sports movie. Their journey, encapsulated in the documentary film “The Cheer Ambassadors,” is a testament to the spirit and determination of a team that wasn’t expected to rise to the top.

In 2011, the team achieved what many thought was impossible for a squad from a country where Western-style cheerleading was introduced in only 1995; they shared the gold medal with the US team at the Cheerleading Worlds, a feat that would put them on the world cheerleading map. This achievement followed their previous success at the 2009 ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, where they earned a silver medal, an accolade they repeated two years later.

Luke Cassady-Dorion, the director of the documentary and an American living in Thailand, was inspired to tell their story after learning of their hardships and triumphs. The Thai team started from scratch, their practice fueled by watching ESPN and YouTube clips, rehearsing from 6 pm to 6 am to adapt to the US timezone. The team’s creativity and ‘sanook’ (fun) approach to cheerleading were their strongest suits, compensating for their physical disadvantages compared to American athletes. Instead of relying on brute strength, the Thai team focused on building intricate pyramids that required immense teamwork.

The underdog story of the Bangkok University cheerleading team is not just a sports narrative but also a cultural one. They disproved the notion that Thais could not excel as a team and brought a unique Thai spirit to the global stage. Their story is one of unity, creativity, and relentless pursuit of excellence against all odds.

This extraordinary journey from underdogs to world champions is a powerful reminder that passion, teamwork, and innovation can defy expectations, inspiring cheerleading squads everywhere to reach for greatness, no matter their beginnings.

The chronicles of Ithaca College, Team Australia, and Bangkok University’s cheerleading teams embody the quintessential underdog story. Each team’s path to success — whether at national competitions, the ICU World Championships, or other international contests — showcases the incredible feats that can be achieved through perseverance and team spirit.

Their stories remind us that in the competitive world of cheer, the heart and hustle often shine brighter than trophies and titles. As these teams have proven, with the right blend of dedication, teamwork, and innovation, even the most unheralded squads can ascend to the pinnacle of cheer excellence, inspiring athletes and audiences alike with their remarkable journeys from the sidelines to the center stage of victory.

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 8, 2023

In the spotlight of competitive arenas, cheer teams bring more than just dynamic choreography and spirited chants; they bring a technological edge that transforms practice into perfection. As the sport evolves, so does the integration of cutting-edge tools designed to sharpen skills, enhance team coordination, and ensure safety. From video analysis to team management platforms, let’s explore the digital allies of today’s cheer squads.

Cheerleading-Software

Video Analysis: Coach’s Eye in Action

First, TechSmith has announced the retirement of their Coach’s Eye app and services. The decision to retire the app followed a one-year grace period that began on September 14, 2021, and lasted until September 15, 2022, during which the app and services were fully supported. The company cited the substantial ongoing development required to keep the app and associated web service relevant and technologically current as the reason for its retirement. Instead of continuing to invest in Coach’s Eye, TechSmith has chosen to direct their resources towards other growing areas within the company.

So that sucks.  But wait…there’s more!

There are new options! Let’s start with OnForm, this iOS app is like having a techy assistant coach. It’s awesome for giving feedback with slow-mo replays and drawing right on the video to highlight what needs work. And the best part? Coaches can chat with their athletes right in the app, using voice or text, making it super easy to stay connected and improve together, whether they’re across the gym or across the country.

Over on Android, VisualEyes is making waves. Created by a coach, this app gets what coaches need. It’s got all these nifty tools like zooming in while recording and a brand-new timer tool, perfect for nailing timing in routines. Plus, it’s got an angle tool that’s just the ticket for those tricky stunts that need to be spot-on.

Both these apps are all about making your cheer routines sharper and safer. They bring the kind of detail that can really up your cheer game. Whether it’s OnForm or VisualEyes, they’re here to help coaches and athletes rock their routines with style and precision.

Team Management: The Digital Dojo

Enter TeamSnap, a digital solution that acts as the central nervous system for team coordination. This platform transcends traditional team management by offering a suite of features that encapsulate every logistical element of cheer.

At its core, TeamSnap simplifies the orchestration of practices and events with a user-friendly calendar interface, ensuring that every member is synchronized with the team’s schedule. The app’s real-time notifications mean that schedule changes are communicated instantaneously, preventing the confusion that can arise from last-minute adjustments.

But TeamSnap’s capabilities extend beyond mere scheduling. It’s a repository for shared resources, including routines, music mixes, and training videos. These resources are accessible anytime, anywhere, making it possible for team members to review and practice individually, reinforcing the collective effort.

Nutrition and physical well-being are just as critical as practice. TeamSnap acknowledges this by providing tools to manage nutrition plans. Coaches can share guidelines on diet, hydration, and rest, tailored to the demands of your athletes. This holistic approach ensures that cheerleaders are not only well-practiced but also well-nourished.

Cheerleading-Practice-Apps

The app also offers messaging that keep everyone connected; private messaging for one-on-one conversations or group forums for team announcements. This constant line of communication fosters a sense of community and support among team members, which is essential for building trust and camaraderie.

Furthermore, the inclusivity of TeamSnap is notable. It offers accessibility across devices, ensuring that each team member, regardless of their technological proficiency or device preference, can stay in the loop. This inclusivity strengthens the team’s unity, as no one is left behind in the digital divide.

In essence, TeamSnap is not just an app; it’s the digital embodiment of a cheer coach’s strategy board, a planner, and a team huddle—all wrapped into one. By leveraging such a comprehensive platform, cheerleading squads can focus on what truly matters: perfecting their performance and showcasing their team spirit.

Guide to Syncing your Cheer Music with your Choreography: Tips for Cheer Coaches

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 2, 2023

Music and choreography go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. However, seamlessly integrating the two can be a daunting task for many cheer coaches. So, what are the key elements to consider while aligning cheer music with choreography? How can one make the most of every beat, lyric, and musical transition? This comprehensive guide aims to answer these questions and more, making your life as a cheer coach just a little bit easier.

Understanding the Basics of Cheer Music: The Four Pillars

Mastering the art of synchronizing cheer music with choreography begins with understanding the underlying structure and nuances of the music itself. As a cheer coach, being well-versed in these fundamentals can significantly elevate your team’s performance. Let’s break down these core aspects one by one.

cheerleading-music-choreography

Musical Structure: The Backbone of Your Routine

In a typical cheer mix, you’ll usually find the following sections:

  • Intro: This section sets the tone for your entire performance. You can think of it as a hook that grabs the audience’s attention. Choreography in this section should be compelling but not give everything away just yet.
  • Cheer: This is the heart of your routine where you can incorporate most of your stunts, tumbles, and jumps. It’s the high-energy section that showcases your team’s athleticism and skill.
  • Dance: Here’s where you get to show off your team’s creativity and synchronization. Dance sections usually allow for artistic expression, so don’t shy away from experimenting with formations and styles.
  • Outro: This is your last impression on the judges and audience, so make it count. A well-thought-out outro can tie your entire performance together and leave a lasting impact.

Understanding these sections helps in mapping out your choreography in a structured manner, ensuring that you maximize the impact of each part of your routine.

Beats and Counts: The Language of Precision

8-counts are to cheerleading what alphabets are to language. These are the building blocks that will guide your choreography. In an 8-count structure, each count corresponds to a particular movement, position, or transition.

  • Syncing with Music: Always ensure that your 8-count sheets are perfectly in sync with the music. For instance, a high-flying stunt could coincide with a climactic musical note for added dramatic effect.
  • Uniformity: Consistency in counts ensures that the entire team moves as a single unit. Even a half-count off can be noticeable and cost you valuable points.

Lyrics and Voiceovers: The Signposts of Your Routine

Customized cheer music often includes personalized lyrics and voiceovers that can serve as auditory cues for your team. For example, if your team name or a specific word is echoed, that could signal the beginning of a new formation or stunt.

  • Internal Cues: These voiceovers can serve as internal cues for your team, keeping everyone on track during the routine.
  • Audience Engagement: Clever use of voiceovers can also engage the audience and get them excited, especially if they’re designed to be interactive or catchy.

Genre and Mood: Matching the Vibe of Your Team

The genre and mood of the music should mirror the essence of your team and the message you want to convey. If your team excels in powerful, high-energy routines, a fast-paced pop or electronic song could be ideal. Alternatively, if your routine has a storyline or a thematic element, a slower, more dramatic piece might be more suitable.

  • Audience Resonance: Choose a genre that not only suits your team but also resonates with your target audience. Sometimes, familiarity with the genre can evoke emotional engagement, adding another layer of impact to your performance.
  • Mood Transitions: If your routine includes different moods or narratives, consider using a multi-genre mix that transitions smoothly to tell your story effectively.

By mastering these four pillars of cheer music—Musical Structure, Beats and Counts, Lyrics and Voiceovers, and Genre and Mood—you’ll be well-equipped to design a routine that’s not just synchronized but also sensational.

Know Your Team’s Skill Level

Evaluating your team’s skill level is paramount when syncing music with choreography. Here’s how to go about it:

  • Identify Strengths and Weaknesses: Is your team excellent at tumbles but not so great at stunts? Use this information to highlight their strengths in the routine.
  • Complexity vs Simplicity: For novice teams, sticking to simpler choreography and musical elements is advised. Advanced teams can experiment with complex transitions and tricks.
  • Customization: Many services, like IPP Music, offer customized cheer music tailored to your team’s capabilities, ensuring a perfect match between music and moves.

Choosing the Right Tempo

A significant aspect to consider is the tempo of your cheer music. This will highly influence the pace and energy of your choreography.

  • Fast Tempo: Ideal for routines that require high energy and rapid movements.
  • Medium Tempo: Great for a balanced routine with a mix of stunts, jumps, and dance elements.
  • Slow Tempo: Suitable for dramatic, story-telling routines with intricate moves and stunts.

Mapping Out Your Routine

Once you have the basics down, you’ll want to start mapping out your routine, including:

  • Sequence Planning: Decide the order in which elements like tumbles, jumps, and stunts will appear in your routine.
  • Transitions: Plan transitions carefully. Good transitions are as important as the stunts or tumbles themselves.
  • Musical Cues: Make use of the built-in cues in your music to signal the start or end of specific elements.

Key Choreography Tips

  • Musicality: Aim to make your moves flow naturally with the music. Each beat, rhythm, and lyric should have a corresponding move or emotion.
  • Timing: Ensure that your team can execute moves within the timeframe of the music segments. Practicing with a metronome can be beneficial.
  • Variety: Add a mix of elements to keep the audience engaged. Variety is the spice of a winning routine!

How to Practice Effectively

Effective practice is the key to a flawless performance. Here are some tips:

  • Start Slow: Begin by practicing individual elements separately before combining them.
  • Record and Review: Record your practice sessions to identify areas of improvement.
  • Repetition: Consistency is key. The more your team practices, the more muscle memory they’ll build, making it easier to sync with the music.

Integrating cheer music and choreography is not just an art but also a science that requires meticulous planning and practice. By understanding the basics of cheer music, assessing your team’s skill level, choosing an appropriate tempo, and employing smart choreography tips, you can create a performance that is not just synchronized but also sensational.

I hope this guide has been helpful in answering some of the common questions cheer coaches have regarding cheer music and choreography. For customized cheer music to match your choreography needs, consider IPP Music  :)

Creating a Legacy: How to Build a Long-Lasting Cheer Program

Creating-a-Legacy--How-to-Build-a-Long-Lasting-Cheer-Program

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 24, 2023

In cheer, fleeting moments of victory are not enough. What distinguishes an extraordinary cheer program from an average one is the legacy it leaves behind. This legacy is built on a combination of consistent excellence, impactful leadership, and a well-rounded approach to all aspects of the sport and community. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore key elements that go into establishing and maintaining a long-lasting cheer program that will be talked about for generations to come.

cheerleading-gym-financial-stability

Laying the Foundation

Craft a Mission Statement

The importance of a well-crafted mission statement cannot be overstated. It serves as the philosophical backbone of your cheer program, highlighting your core values, goals, and visions. Involve your coaching staff, athletes, and even parents in this process to get diverse input. For example, your mission statement might read, “To empower young athletes to achieve excellence in sport and character, fostering a lifelong love for cheerleading.” Once created, make sure this statement is visible in your gym, on your website, and in any printed materials to continually remind everyone involved of your program’s core aims.

Build a Strong Team Culture

A team’s culture can make or break a cheer program. You need to establish a culture that celebrates each athlete’s unique strengths while fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Host team-building activities regularly, whether it’s a weekend training camp or simple ice-breaker games during practice. Also, make time to celebrate birthdays, academic achievements, and other life milestones to show that you care about your athletes’ lives outside of the gym. This kind of nurturing environment is key for long-term retention and success.

Setting Clear Objectives

Short-term Goals

Short-term goals offer immediate targets that keep everyone engaged and focused. These could range from perfecting a specific routine for an upcoming competition to improving the squad’s average jump height over a semester. Keep these goals SMART—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Track these metrics diligently and celebrate when they are achieved to keep morale high.

Long-term Goals

These are your legacy-building milestones. It could be winning a national championship within the next five years or perhaps getting your program recognized as a breeding ground for college-level talent. Once set, break these long-term objectives down into smaller, achievable steps and assign them deadlines. This makes the journey less overwhelming and more manageable.

Effective Coaching

Credentials and Training

Your coaching staff should not only have the relevant qualifications and experience but also a commitment to ongoing education. Consider investing in regular workshops or training sessions on the latest cheer techniques, sports psychology, and even first aid. Moreover, having a coaching staff that is well-versed in contemporary cheerleading dynamics adds significant credibility to your program.

Communication

Establishing open lines of communication is crucial for a successful cheer program. Use multiple channels like emails, group chats, and face-to-face meetings to keep everyone in the loop. Keep parents informed about practice schedules, competition dates, and any updates or changes. The key is to be transparent and accessible, which fosters a culture of trust.

Recruitment and Retention

Scouting Talent

Talent is the lifeblood of any cheer program. Utilize local competitions, school events, and social media platforms to scout promising athletes. Consider hosting an annual open house where potential recruits can visit your facilities, meet the coaching staff, and even participate in a mini training session.

Retaining Athletes

To keep your talented athletes committed to your program, provide them with the resources they need to succeed, both in and out of competitions. This could include scholarships, advanced training facilities, or even academic support. Conduct regular check-ins with your athletes to understand their needs and concerns, and be prepared to adapt your approach accordingly.

Financial Stability

Fundraising and Sponsorships

Finances can be a major stumbling block for long-term success. Host regular fundraising events like car washes, bake sales, or even cheer clinics where community members pay a small fee for a short cheerleading lesson. Furthermore, don’t hesitate to approach local businesses for sponsorships; offer to promote their business at your events or on your uniforms as a quid pro quo.

Budget Management

Managing your budget wisely is critical. Designate funds for essential activities like training, uniforms, travel, and equipment maintenance, and always have a contingency fund. Utilize financial software or hire an accountant who specializes in sports programs to keep your finances in check.

Community Involvement

Host Events

Hosting events, from small community gatherings to large-scale competitions, will raise your program’s profile. These events not only provide additional fundraising opportunities but also help in building a strong network within the cheerleading community.

cheer-program-mission-statement

Volunteer Work

Community service is not just for show; it helps your athletes develop a well-rounded character. Whether it’s visiting local hospitals in your cheer uniforms to bring some joy to patients or participating in community clean-up projects, these activities instill a sense of responsibility and belonging among your athletes.

Alumni Engagement

Networking

Engage with your alumni regularly. They can offer invaluable mentorship opportunities for your current athletes and can even help in job placements post-graduation. Create an alumni newsletter to keep them updated about the program and invite them to special events.

Fundraising

Alumni are often willing to contribute to their alma mater’s continued success. Regularly share your program’s achievements and milestones with them, and don’t hesitate to set up an alumni donation fund. Even small contributions can add up and make a significant difference.

effective-coaching

Staying Updated

Techniques and Trends

Cheerleading is an evolving sport. Attend coaching seminars, subscribe to relevant publications, and watch popular cheer shows or competitions to stay up-to-date. Updating your techniques not only keeps your program competitive but also keeps your athletes engaged and excited to learn.

Equipment and Safety

Regularly assess and update your equipment. Your athletes’ safety is paramount, and using outdated or faulty equipment is a risk that no program can afford to take. Keep up with safety protocols and ensure your coaching staff is well-versed in them as well.

Building a legacy with a long-lasting cheer program requires a deep-rooted commitment to excellence in every aspect—be it coaching, athlete development, or community engagement. Remember, the path to a lasting legacy is a marathon, not a sprint. With the right strategies and unwavering dedication, you can transform your cheer program into a name that will be remembered for years to come. Are you up for the challenge? Your legacy starts today.

The Comprehensive Guide to Stunt Progressions for Cheer Coaches

The Comprehensive Guide to Stunt Progressions for Cheer Coaches

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 18, 2023

Today we’ll delve into the science of stunting, the psychology of team dynamics, and the art of performance, offering you actionable insights to elevate your squad to unparalleled heights.

Stunt-Progressions

Why Stunt Progressions Are Not Just for Rookies

While it’s easy to associate stunt progressions with beginner levels, even the most accomplished teams can benefit from revisiting these foundational building blocks. However, for the advanced team, the approach shouldn’t be repetitive but rather analytical. Here’s why:

  • Risk Mitigation: A nuanced understanding of each progression allows coaches to pinpoint minor, often overlooked errors that could spell disaster in complex stunts.
  • Skill Specialization: Mastering the nuances of each progression enables athletes to specialize in their roles, which in turn significantly improves individual and team performance.
  • Performance Metrics: Leveraging tools like video analysis and biomechanics software allows coaches to optimize each movement, timing, and force, lending a scientific rigor to the art of cheerleading.

The Roles Re-Examined: More than Just Titles

In competitive cheerleading, roles are not just labels but encapsulate specific skill sets, expectations, and responsibilities that each team member must fulfill.

  • Flyer: At advanced levels, training should include vestibular exercises to improve body awareness, control, and mid-air adjustment skills. Psychological coaching can also be beneficial for managing performance anxiety.
  • Base: Specialized strength training regimes like plyometrics or isometric exercises can hone specific muscle groups that are vital for bases. Additionally, drills focusing on adaptive grip techniques can improve stunt stability.
  • Spotter: Rather than being passive overseers, spotters should engage in active problem-solving during stunts. Communication drills can help them deliver effective, real-time feedback and corrections.

Mastering the Nuances: Beyond Basic Skills

While basic stunts form the foundation of all cheerleading routines, mastering their intricacies can yield exponential performance improvements.

Prep-Level Stunts:

  • Thigh Stand with Core Activation: Incorporating core-engagement techniques can offer more stable thigh stands and can also improve the bases’ ability to adjust and adapt to movement variations from the flyer.

Extension-Level Stunts:

  • Full Extension with Synchronized Breathing: Introduce meditative breathing exercises to help your team focus. Synchronized breathing between the bases and the flyer can add an additional layer of stability and control.

Decoding Cheer Terminology: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners and Parents

Decoding-Cheer-Terminology--A-Comprehensive-Guide-for-Beginners-and-Parents

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 11, 2023

The world of cheer can be somewhat challenging, especially for those new to the scene. From unique terms, moves, and phrases, cheerleading, as a sport and art form, is replete with its own specialized language. In this comprehensive guide, we aim to break down and demystify this jargon for parents, beginners, and the curious.

1. The Origins of Cheerleading and its Jargon

Cheerleading originated in the late 19th century as an all-male activity. Over the years, it evolved and incorporated more gymnastic elements, leading to the creation of specific terms to describe stunts, moves, and formations. As the sport grew in complexity and popularity, so did its lexicon.

cheerleading-lingo-slang

2. Basics: Core Terms Every Cheer Enthusiast Should Know

Flyer: The essence of acrobatic elegance in cheerleading. Being a flyer requires not only physical strength but also immense trust in the team. Elevating or being tossed into the air demands a blend of balance, confidence, and precision. The flyer’s role, though breathtaking, requires hours of practice to ensure every move exudes grace and poise.

Base: Often unsung heroes of cheerleading, bases are the foundation of most stunts. These individuals, usually with exceptional strength and stability, are tasked with the crucial job of supporting or elevating the flyer. The synchronization between bases ensures fluidity in routines and, more importantly, the safety of the flyer.

Spotter: The guardians of the cheer world. Their primary role is to ensure that no harm comes to the flyer. By being vigilant and having a keen eye for potential hazards, spotters play an instrumental role in preventing injuries and ensuring that routines are executed safely.

Routine: More than just a series of moves, a routine is a story told through synchronized dance, tumbling, stunts, and jumps. Choreographing a routine requires understanding the strengths of each team member and ensuring every movement complements the next, creating a seamless visual spectacle.

3. Deciphering Stunts and Moves

Liberty (Lib): A testament to balance and strength. This stunt demands that the flyer showcases their stability by maintaining a pose on one foot, elevated by the base. The aesthetics of the Lib are amplified by the free leg’s positioning, making it a favorite in many routines.

Basket Toss: A combination of trust and thrill. The bases use their collective strength to propel the flyer into the air. While airborne, the flyer has a brief moment to exhibit a series of tricks, spins, or poses before descending into the secure embrace of their team.

Full: An embodiment of rotational elegance. Executing a full requires the cheerleader to harness momentum and perform a complete 360-degree twist in the air. Mastery of this move is a testament to a cheerleader’s tumbling prowess.

Tick-Tock: A transition that requires impeccable timing. As the flyer switches their weight from one foot to the other, the bases and spotters must adjust in perfect harmony. The beauty of the Tick-Tock lies in its fluidity and synchronization.

4. Navigating the Competitive Arena

Zero Deductions: Every cheerleader’s dream. Achieving zero deductions signifies a routine executed to perfection. It’s a reflection of countless hours of practice, team synchronization, and flawless execution.

Full Out: The climax of preparation. In the final rehearsals leading up to a competition, athletes push their boundaries, performing routines with unmatched energy and intensity. This not only prepares them for the main event but also helps iron out any remaining imperfections.

Mat: More than just a surface. The mat is a testament to the evolution of cheerleading. Designed to aid athletes in maximizing their performance while ensuring safety, its spring-loaded mechanism is pivotal in enhancing jumps and cushioning falls.

cheerleading-lingo-slang

5. Delving Deeper: Cheer Slang and Insider Lingo

Cupie: A picturesque pose that showcases the synergy between a flyer and their base. Achieving the Cupie requires the base to display immense strength and stability, allowing the flyer to strike a balanced pose on one foot high in the air.

Crisping: The art of refinement. As teams approach competition day, every gesture, move, and formation is reviewed and refined. This process ensures that routines are not just technically sound, but also aesthetically pleasing.

Choreo: The heart and soul of any routine. Choreography sessions are a blend of creativity and athleticism. It’s during these sessions that routines come to life, with every move meticulously planned to ensure visual appeal and team synchronization.

6. Essential Tips for Parents and Newbies

a. Immerse Yourself: The world of cheerleading is vast and vibrant. To truly understand its intricacies, one must dive deep. Engaging with dedicated platforms, such as this blog, provides insights, stories, and experiences that will help you understand the cheer world.

b. Active Observation: There’s a difference between watching and observing. By actively analyzing routines, newbies can begin to understand the technicalities of moves, the importance of synchronization, and the sheer effort that goes into every performance.

c. Network: The cheer community is vast and usually very supportive. By connecting with seasoned parents, experienced cheerleaders, and dedicated coaches, newcomers can gain invaluable insights, tips, and advice that can help navigate the initial stages of their cheer journey. Look for facebook groups centered around the gym you or your child is in or groups that are just cheer focused.  You can glean a lot from just viewing discussions between seasoned cheer people who know what they’re talking about.

Understanding the language is the first step in appreciating the dedication and passion of cheer. Every jump, tumble, and stunt is a story waiting to be told. So, immerse yourself, observe, learn, and above all, keep reaching for zero!

How to Prepare Your Team for NCA Nationals: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Prepare Your Team for NCA Nationals: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 10, 2023

For collegiate cheerleading teams, the NCA Nationals in Daytona isn’t just a competition—it’s a rite of passage. Held during the first week of April, it’s a convergence of talent, where teams like Navarro, OSU, and TVCC have consistently set high standards. As we approach this pinnacle of cheerleading prowess, it’s essential to arm your team with the right strategies. Here’s a detailed roadmap.

Cheerleading-Nationals-Preparation

1. Proactive Planning

Evaluate Your Squad’s Capacities: In the vast realm of collegiate cheerleading, each squad has its strengths and unique attributes. Dive deep into introspection. While Navarro might be known for their dynamic formations and TVCC for their impeccable synchronization, what can your team bring to the table? Dissect your previous performances. Identify areas of brilliance and zones that need more dedication.

Chalk Out a Precise Timeline: With the Nationals set in April, every preceding month has its importance:

  • January: Establish foundational routines, focusing on team dynamics.
  • February: This should be your intensive training phase—longer practices, dedicated workshops, and more.
  • March: Refinement. Constant feedback, adjustments, and mental conditioning. Also, allocate time for relaxation to prevent burnout.

2. Studying the Titans: Learn from the Best

Analyze Past Performances of Powerhouses: Platforms like YouTube provide ample footage from past NCA Nationals. Study them. What made Navarro’s pyramid formation so awe-inspiring last year? How did OSU’s flyers manage such gravity-defying stunts with impeccable grace? Make these sessions interactive—discuss with your team, note observations, and brainstorm.

Introduce Fresh Elements: While emulating the greats provides a foundation, innovation captures attention. Drawing inspiration from giants like OSU and Navarro is beneficial, but adding your squad’s unique essence ensures your performance is memorable and stands out.

3. Intensive Training Regime

Augment Practice Hours: As the Nationals loom closer, your team’s training regimen should mirror the intensity of the impending competition. Gradually increase practice hours, ensuring every team member is comfortable and not overwhelmed. The goal is perfection, but also ensuring the mental and physical well-being of your squad.

Holistic Conditioning: Beyond routines, focus on overall conditioning:

  • Physical: Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular workouts, strength training, and flexibility exercises. These not only enhance performance but also reduce the risk of injuries.
  • Mental: Psychological resilience is equally paramount. Techniques like meditation, group discussions, and even professional counseling sessions can bolster mental strength.

4. Understanding Daytona-specific Dynamics

Venue Familiarization: The environment plays a crucial role. If feasible, arrange for a reconnaissance trip to the venue. Acquaint your team with the surroundings. The ambiance, floor material, acoustic dynamics—all can influence performance. Early familiarization reduces the ‘unknown’ factor, providing a psychological edge.

Weather Preparations: Daytona’s weather in April can be a mixed bag. Plan for contingencies. Whether it’s ensuring your costumes are adaptable to unexpected cold spells or prepping the team for potential humidity—every detail counts.

5. Visualization: The Power of Mind

Picture the Win: Visualization is a potent tool, used by athletes worldwide. Encourage your team to imagine every aspect of their performance—from their entrance, key stunts, to the final bow. But also, have them visualize the euphoria of a perfect performance, the applause, the accolades.

Detailed Imagery Sessions: Organize dedicated visualization sessions. Dim the lights, play soft background music, and guide your team through a mental rehearsal of their routine. This aids in muscle memory and confidence.

Ultimate-Cheer-Guide
Strengthening-Team-Dynamics-in-Cheerleading

6. Costumes and Props: More than Aesthetics

Prioritize Costume Trials: While costumes add visual appeal, they need to be functional. Organize multiple trial sessions. Ensure the fabric, fit, and design are conducive to the strenuous routines. Remember, a wardrobe malfunction or an uncomfortable costume can disrupt performance.

Prop Quality and Integration: For routines that utilize props, they should seamlessly integrate into the performance. Ensure their quality, stability, and functionality. Regular checks and rehearsals with props are essential to ensure they complement rather than hinder the performance.

7. Engage Alumni and Seek Expert Insights

Leverage Alumni Experience: Your predecessors have trodden the path you’re embarking upon. Engage with them. Their experiences, insights, and feedback can be invaluable. Whether it’s advice on handling the pressure, tips on impressing the judges, or even insights into competitors, they’re a goldmine of information

So, as we inch closer to that big week in April, remember: prepping for the NCA Nationals in Daytona isn’t just about nailing those routines. It’s about team spirit, clever strategy, and a whole lot of heart. Teams like Navarro, OSU, and TVCC? They’ve set the bar high, but every year is a new game, and there’s always room at the top. With the right prep, determination, and that special something only your team has, who’s to say you won’t be the next big thing? Let’s gear up, give it our all, and make some unforgettable memories

Passion for the Sport

The Heartbeat of a Great Coach

A love for cheerleading is the foundation upon which all other coaching qualities are built. Passion fuels long hours, drives the pursuit of excellence, and inspires those around you. Without a genuine love for the sport, it’s almost impossible to sustain the energy required to coach effectively.

Why It Matters

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

The Soul of Team Dynamics

Understanding and managing emotions—yours and your athletes’—is a less tangible but incredibly vital skill. Emotional intelligence allows you to connect with your team on a deeper level, which is crucial for resolving conflicts, building team chemistry, and motivating athletes.

  • Personal Development: Beyond the sport, you’re helping shape young adults. Your emotional intelligence sets an example and provides valuable life lessons.

Strong Leadership and Decision-Making Abilities

The Compass of Team Direction

As a cheer coach, you’re the leader your team looks to for direction. Strong leadership involves making critical decisions under pressure, providing clear guidance, and setting the tone for your team’s culture.

5 Creative Strategies to Engage Cheerleaders in Practice: Maximize Performance, Build Team Spirit

5-Creative-Strategies-to-Engage-Cheerleaders-in-Practice

By Steve Pawlyk

Published September 26, 2023

When you’re coaching cheerleaders, it’s not just about mastering the stunts and perfecting the routines. The real challenge often lies in keeping your athletes engaged, motivated, and focused during practice. A disengaged cheerleader is not only detrimental to their performance but can also impact the morale and cohesiveness of the entire squad. Welcome to YouHitZero, your ultimate hub for everything related to cheerleading. In this article, we’ll explore five creative strategies to engage cheerleaders in practice, making each session not just effective but also fun.

cheerleader-motivation

1. Gamification: Turn Drills into Challenges

Why It Works

Gamification involves turning ordinary tasks into competitions or games. It taps into the natural competitive nature of athletes and makes repetitive drills more enjoyable.

How to Implement

  • Stunt Bingo: Create bingo cards with different stunts and moves. As cheerleaders perform them correctly, they can mark off a square. The first to complete a row wins a small prize.
  • Skill Points: Assign point values to various skills and stunts. Cheerleaders can earn points for mastering them, which they can later exchange for team merchandise or other incentives.

Pro Tip: Keep it Balanced

Make sure the games are balanced to include cheerleaders of all skill levels. You don’t want to discourage beginners by making the challenges too hard.

2. Leveraging Data Analytics for Performance and Safety

The integration of data analytics in cheerleading is still in its nascent stages but holds immense promise. Advanced software can analyze videos of routines to provide invaluable insights into timing, formation, and even the biomechanics of each athlete. Not only can this data be used to enhance performance, fine-tune routines, and develop new stunts, but it can also be crucial for injury prevention. By understanding stress points and risky movements, coaches can restructure routines to be both stunning and safer. As technology advances, data analytics could become as integral to cheerleading as mats and pom-poms.

3. Social Media Challenges

Why It Works

Engaging cheerleaders through social media not only boosts team spirit but also builds a community around your cheer program.

How to Implement

  • Hashtag Challenges: Create a unique hashtag for your team and encourage cheerleaders to post their practice videos.
  • Live Q&A Sessions: Host a live Q&A on platforms like Instagram, where cheerleaders can ask questions about techniques, upcoming events, and more.

Pro Tip: Monitor Content

Ensure that all content aligns with the values and guidelines of your cheer program.

4. Incorporate Music and Dance Elements

Why It Works

Music and dance elements can inject a fresh dose of enthusiasm into practice sessions, making them more vibrant and enjoyable.

How to Implement

  • Customized Playlists: At IPP Music, we specialize in custom cheer music that can energize your practice sessions.
  • Dance-offs: Incorporate short dance-off sessions between drills to break the monotony and energize the team.

Pro Tip: Keep It Appropriate

Choose music and dance elements that are age-appropriate and align with the goals of your practice session.

Improve-Cheer-Skills

5. Peer Coaching and Mentorship

Why It Works

Peer coaching fosters a culture of mutual respect and learning, allowing more experienced cheerleaders to mentor newer members.

How to Implement

  • Buddy System: Pair up newer cheerleaders with veterans for one-on-one coaching.
  • Skill Swaps: Allow cheerleaders to teach each other specialized skills they excel in.

Pro Tip: Structured Feedback

Create a structured feedback system to measure the effectiveness of peer coaching and make necessary adjustments.

Engaging cheerleaders in practice doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With creative strategies like gamification, social media challenges, incorporating music and dance, and peer coaching, you can make each practice session a fun and effective learning experience. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to improve performance while fostering a strong sense of team spirit and cohesiveness

How to Deal with Difficult Parents: A Coach’s Guide

how-to-deal-with-difficult-parents-cheerleading-coaching

Published September 21, 2023

Coaches often have to juggle more than just routines, athletes, and competitions. One of the most challenging aspects can be dealing with difficult parents. Whether they’re over-involved, overly critical, or simply not supportive, difficult parents can create stress and obstacles for any cheer coach. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore effective strategies for managing and improving your relationship with challenging parents, ensuring a smoother and more fulfilling coaching experience for everyone involved.

Understanding the Types of Difficult Parents

Before tackling the issue, it’s essential to understand the different types of difficult parents you might encounter.

cheerleading-coaching-difficult-parents

The Overzealous Parent

The Overzealous Parent is a fixture at cheerleading practices, events, and even social gatherings related to the team. They are highly invested in their child’s cheer career, sometimes to the point where it seems like they’re reliving their own athletic aspirations through their kids. This type of parent is often well-meaning but can become a distraction or even a source of stress for you or your athletes. They might scrutinize your coaching techniques, question your decisions, and even offer unsolicited advice on how to run practices or routines.

Potential Issues

  • Micromanagement: Overzealous parents may try to dictate how practices should be conducted or criticize your coaching methods.
  • Undermining Authority: Their constant presence and vocal opinions can undermine your authority as a coach, causing confusion among the athletes.
  • Creating Unnecessary Pressure: Their high expectations can translate into undue pressure on their child and, by extension, the whole team.

How to Deal with the Overzealous Parent

Handling an Overzealous Parent requires a delicate balance of assertiveness, diplomacy, and professionalism. Here’s how:

1. Set Clear Boundaries Early On

During your initial parent meeting, make it clear what your role is as a coach and what you expect from parents. You might say something like, “While we appreciate your enthusiasm and support, it’s crucial to remember that during practices and events, I am responsible for coaching the athletes.”

2. Maintain Professionalism

Always maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with these parents. If they offer unsolicited advice during a practice, politely thank them for their input and say, “I appreciate your perspective. I have a specific plan for the team, and it’s important that we stick to it to ensure everyone’s success.”

3. Private Conversations

If the parent continues to overstep, consider pulling them aside for a private conversation. Be honest but tactful, explaining that while you appreciate their interest and passion, their behavior is becoming disruptive. You might say, “I understand you have your child’s best interest at heart, but it’s important for me to be able to coach the team without outside interference.”

4. Enforce Rules Consistently

If the behavior continues, you may need to enforce stricter boundaries, like limiting parental observation during practices or asking them to refrain from approaching you during practice hours.

5. Seek Support from Program Administration

In extreme cases, it may be necessary to involve higher-ups like the athletic director or program coordinator. Having a neutral third party can sometimes help mediate the situation and bring about a resolution.

While the Overzealous Parent may pose challenges, remember that their passion comes from a place of wanting the best for their child. By setting clear boundaries, maintaining professionalism, and fostering open communication, you can turn this potentially difficult relationship into a more manageable, and even constructive, one.

The Critic

The Critic is a type of parent who seems to find fault in almost everything—from your coaching methods to the team’s performance, and sometimes even the cheerleading program as a whole. While criticism can sometimes be constructive, these parents often present their opinions in a way that can be demoralizing or disruptive. They might openly question your decisions, compare your coaching unfavorably to others, or make their criticisms known to other parents or even the athletes themselves.

Potential Issues

  • Eroding Confidence: The constant criticism can undermine your authority and erode the confidence of both you and your athletes.
  • Disrupting Team Dynamics: If not managed carefully, their negative comments can create a toxic environment, affecting the team’s morale and cohesiveness.
  • Miscommunication: Critics often base their judgments on their own perceptions, which might be uninformed or biased, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts.

How to Deal with The Critic

Managing a parent who is a Critic requires a thick skin, diplomacy, and a focus on constructive dialogue. Here’s how:

1. Don’t Take It Personally

The first step in dealing with a Critic is to understand that the criticism is often not about you. It may stem from the parent’s own insecurities, past experiences, or high expectations for their child. Take their comments as feedback, not as an attack on your competence.

2. Acknowledge and Redirect

When faced with criticism, acknowledge the parent’s concerns without agreeing or disagreeing. You might say, “I understand you have concerns about [specific issue]. I’m committed to doing what’s best for all the athletes on the team.”

cheer-coaching-difficult-parents

3. Keep the Focus on the Athletes

Remind the parent that your primary concern is the development and well-being of all the athletes on the team. Emphasize that you have a strategy and plan in place aimed at achieving this.

4. Seek to Understand

Sometimes criticism arises from misunderstandings or lack of information. Ask the parent to elaborate on their concerns and provide your perspective to clear up any misconceptions.

5. Set Boundaries for Feedback

Establish a formal channel and appropriate times for parents to provide feedback, like scheduled meetings or designated office hours. This helps prevent disruptive confrontations during practices or events.

6. Consult with Other Coaches or Administration

If the criticism becomes excessive or starts affecting your ability to coach, it may be helpful to consult with other coaches or higher-ups in your program. They can offer additional perspectives and may even mediate if necessary.

In Summary

While dealing with a Critic can be challenging, it’s important to remember that their criticisms often come from a place of wanting their child to succeed. By maintaining professionalism, acknowledging their concerns, and setting appropriate boundaries, you can manage these difficult interactions more effectively. Ultimately, open communication and a focus on the athletes’ well-being can often diffuse tension and lead to a more constructive relationship with even the most critical of parents.

The Uninvolved Parent

The Uninvolved Parent is generally passive in their approach to their child’s cheerleading journey. They fulfill the basic responsibilities like paying for classes and providing transportation to events, but their engagement usually stops there. They are rarely seen at practices, seldom volunteer for team activities, and may not show much interest in the team’s progress or their child’s development in the sport.

Potential Issues

  • Lack of Support: The absence of parental involvement can sometimes translate into a lack of emotional or moral support for the athlete.
  • Missed Opportunities: These parents are often unaware of the full range of experiences and benefits that active involvement in cheerleading can offer to both them and their children.
  • Limited Communication: Their limited involvement can make it difficult to keep them informed about important updates, leading to misunderstandings or missed commitments.

How to Deal with The Uninvolved Parent

Engaging an Uninvolved Parent can be a subtle art that requires persistence, tact, and a focus on highlighting the positive impacts of greater involvement. Here’s how:

1. Open Channels of Communication

Take the initiative to keep these parents informed. Regularly send out newsletters or updates that highlight not just team achievements but also individual accomplishments, including those of their child.

2. Personalize the Engagement

Whenever possible, provide personalized updates on their child’s progress. This could be through periodic one-on-one meetings or even simple notes that point out improvements, milestones reached, or commendable efforts during practices or competitions.

3. Offer Inclusive Opportunities

Create opportunities for all parents to be part of the team’s activities, even if in small ways. This could be as simple as inviting them to a team celebration or asking for volunteers for less demanding tasks.

4. Highlight the Benefits

Sometimes parents are uninvolved because they are unaware of the benefits of active participation. Make it a point to share stories or testimonials from other parents who have found great value in becoming more involved in their child’s cheerleading experience.

5. Be Patient and Consistent

Change rarely happens overnight. Continue your efforts to involve them and recognize any steps, however small, they take toward becoming more engaged.

6. Assess and Adapt

Keep track of your engagement efforts and their outcomes. If you find that certain strategies are more effective than others, adapt your approach accordingly.

In Summary

While it may be challenging to engage an Uninvolved Parent, it’s worth the effort for the sake of the athlete and the team as a whole. Through consistent communication, personalized engagement, and a bit of patience, you can help them become more active participants in their child’s cheerleading journey. In doing so, you not only enhance the experience for their child but also contribute to a more cohesive and supportive team environment.

Dealing with difficult parents is a challenge that almost every cheer coach will face at some point. By understanding the types of difficult parents, setting boundaries, communicating effectively, and employing conflict resolution strategies, you can create a more harmonious and successful cheerleading program.

How to Attract Sponsorships for Your Cheer Team

How to Attract Sponsorships for Your Cheer Team

By Steve Pawlyk

Published September 19, 2023

So, you’ve mastered the art of high-flying stunts, synchronized cheers, and dynamic choreography. Your cheer team is a force to be reckoned with, but there’s just one problem—finances. Even the most talented squads need funds to attend competitions, buy uniforms, and secure professional training. That’s where sponsorships come into play.

In the world of cheerleading, sponsorships can be a game-changer. They not only provide the financial boost you need but also offer brand exposure and networking opportunities. If you’re looking to take your cheer team to the next level, attracting sponsorships is a must. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to secure sponsorships and build lasting relationships with your benefactors.

cheer-team-funding

Understanding Sponsorships

What is a Sponsorship?

A sponsorship is essentially a business relationship where an entity provides financial or in-kind support to a cheer team in exchange for some form of advertising or brand recognition. The benefits can be mutual; your team gets much-needed funding, and the sponsor gets to connect with a specific audience.

Types of Sponsorships

  • Financial Sponsorships: Direct monetary contributions used for uniforms, travel, equipment, and other expenses.
  • In-Kind Sponsorships: Provision of goods or services, such as free practice space, uniforms, or cheerleading accessories.
  • Event Sponsorships: Sponsorship for a particular event like a cheer competition or fundraising gala.
  • Media Partnerships: Collaboration with media outlets for extensive coverage, enhancing visibility for both the team and the sponsor.

Identifying Potential Sponsors

Local Businesses

Local businesses are often more willing to sponsor community-based activities. Reach out to gyms, restaurants, sports shops, and other local establishments.

Corporations

Large companies often have dedicated budgets for corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, which could include sponsorship opportunities.

Alumni and Parents

Don’t underestimate the power of your personal network. Alumni who were once part of the cheer team or parents who are entrepreneurs could be potential sponsors.

Online Platforms

Crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe offer a platform to raise small amounts from a larger pool of people. While not traditional sponsorships, these can be a significant source of funds.

Crafting a Sponsorship Proposal

Components of a Strong Proposal

  • Introduction: Briefly introduce your cheer team, its achievements, and why you’re seeking sponsorship.
  • Objectives and Benefits: Clearly outline what the sponsorship funds will be used for and how it benefits the sponsor.
  • Sponsorship Packages: Offer different sponsorship levels, each with its own set of benefits for the sponsor.
  • Terms and Conditions: Define the period of sponsorship, expectations, and how the relationship will be managed.
  • Contact Information: Provide a point of contact for sponsors to reach out to for queries or clarifications.

Tips for an Effective Proposal

  • Use professional language but maintain a conversational tone.

How to Pitch to Sponsors

Make it Personal

Tailor your pitch to align with the sponsor’s business goals or CSR initiatives. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives refer to efforts made by companies to contribute positively to society and the environment. These initiatives go beyond the primary goal of making a profit and focus on creating a positive impact in various areas, including social welfare, environmental sustainability, education, healthcare, and community development.

CSR initiatives can take various forms, such as:

  • Philanthropy: Donating funds or resources to charitable organizations, hospitals, schools, or disaster relief efforts.
  • Sustainability: Adopting environmentally-friendly practices like reducing carbon emissions, conserving water, and promoting recycling within the company.
  • Community Engagement: Sponsoring local events, providing educational scholarships, or organizing community service days where employees volunteer in local communities.
  • Employee Welfare: Offering comprehensive healthcare, education allowances, and creating a safe and inclusive work environment.
  • Ethical Business Practices: Ensuring fair trade, ethical sourcing of materials, and implementing anti-corruption measures.
  • Consumer Protection: Taking steps to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers by adhering to quality standards and ethical marketing practices.

Companies often dedicate a portion of their budget to CSR initiatives and may have a department or team specifically tasked with managing these efforts, so asking to speak to someone about their CSR initiatives may be helpful when cold-calling companies about a potential sponsorship.

Use Data

Numbers speak louder than words. When pitching for sponsorships, the inclusion of quantifiable data can lend significant weight to your proposal. By showcasing statistics or data related to your cheer team’s reach, popularity, or performance, you’re offering potential sponsors a tangible glimpse into the benefits they can expect from the partnership. Let’s delve into why this approach is effective and how to go about it.

The Importance of Using Data

  • Objective Evaluation: Data offers an objective measure of your cheer team’s capabilities and influence. Whether you’re talking about social media following, competition wins, or community outreach, numbers provide a concrete evaluation metric that’s hard to dispute.
  • ROI Estimation: Businesses are keen on understanding the Return on Investment (ROI) when they are contemplating a sponsorship. By presenting data, you provide them with the metrics needed to estimate potential ROI.
  • Credibility: Statistics and verified data add credibility to your sponsorship proposal. They show that you’ve done your homework, understand your team’s strengths, and are serious about the partnership.
  • Consumer Reach: For the sponsor, the ultimate goal is often to reach a wider or targeted consumer base. By presenting data on your team’s reach, you offer them insights into a potential new market segment.

How to Use Data Effectively

  • Audience Demographics: Showcase the age, location, and other demographic details of your audience. This helps sponsors understand if your followers align with their target market.
  • Social Media Metrics: Use analytics from platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to show your online influence. Data points can include follower count, engagement rates, and average reach per post.
  • Event Attendance: If your cheer team participates in or hosts events, attendance figures can be a compelling data point. This shows potential sponsors the direct exposure they can expect.
  • Competition Performance: Rankings, trophies, and other accolades serve as proof of your team’s performance level. High-performing teams are often more attractive to sponsors.
  • Consumer Behavior: If available, data on how your audience interacts with your team can be invaluable. For instance, merchandise sales figures can provide insights into consumer behavior and spending patterns.
  • Visual Presentation: Data is most impactful when easily digestible. Consider presenting key statistics through charts, graphs, or infographics for greater clarity and impact.

Incorporating data into your sponsorship pitch can make a significant difference in how your proposal is received. It gives potential sponsors a clearer understanding of what you bring to the table and how the partnership can be mutually beneficial. By focusing on data that highlights your team’s reach, popularity, and performance, you’re not just telling sponsors why they should invest in you—you’re showing them.

Be Transparent

In the realm of sponsorships, transparency isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a foundational element that can make or break the relationship between your cheer team and your sponsors. Whether you’re partnering with a small local business or a large corporation, sponsors want to know that their investment is being put to good use. This is where the importance of being transparent comes into play.

Why Transparency Matters

  • Builds Trust: When you’re upfront about how the sponsorship funds will be allocated, you’re essentially building a foundation of trust. Trust is vital for any business relationship, particularly sponsorships that often involve substantial financial or in-kind contributions.
  • Accountability: Transparency creates a sense of accountability on your part. By outlining how the funds will be used, you’re making a commitment to use those resources responsibly and effectively.
  • Aligns Expectations: Being transparent from the get-go helps align expectations between your cheer team and the sponsor. This clarity can prevent misunderstandings and potential conflicts in the future.
  • Enhances Credibility: Clear articulation of fund usage not only builds trust but also enhances your team’s credibility. Sponsors are more likely to invest in an organization that is professional, well-organized, and straightforward about its needs and spending.
local-business-sponsorship

How to Be Transparent

  • Detailed Budget Breakdown: One of the most effective ways to be transparent is to provide a detailed budget breakdown. This should include specifics like travel expenses for competitions, uniform costs, equipment purchases, and training fees.
  • Regular Updates: Don’t let the communication stop after receiving the sponsorship funds. Keep your sponsors in the loop with regular updates on how their contributions are making an impact. Whether it’s through monthly reports, newsletters, or one-on-one meetings, consistent communication is key.
  • Photographic Evidence: A picture is worth a thousand words. Providing photos of the team using the sponsored gear, participating in a sponsored event, or engaging in community service activities sponsored by the company can offer tangible proof of fund utilization.
  • Open for Audits: Offering to have the accounts audited or reviewed can also go a long way in establishing trust. This shows you have nothing to hide and are using the funds as agreed upon.
  • Feedback Loop: Always be open to feedback from your sponsors. If they have suggestions on how the funds can be better utilized, be willing to listen and adjust if necessary.

Follow-Up

Once you’ve sent out your meticulously crafted sponsorship proposal, it may be tempting to sit back and wait for responses to roll in. However, this passive approach often results in missed opportunities. The act of following up is a crucial, yet frequently overlooked, aspect of the sponsorship acquisition process. Here’s why it’s so important and some best practices to keep in mind.

Why Following Up is Important

  • Visibility: Sponsorship proposals can sometimes get lost amidst a sea of emails and business correspondence. Following up ensures that your proposal gets the attention it deserves.
  • Interest Gauge: A follow-up can serve as a gauge for the interest level of the potential sponsor. If they respond positively, you know you have a foot in the door; if they decline or don’t respond, it may be time to move on to other prospects.
  • Demonstrates Seriousness: Taking the time to follow up shows the potential sponsor that you are serious about the partnership. It adds a layer of professionalism that could set you apart from other teams seeking sponsorship.
  • Opportunity for Clarification: A follow-up can provide an opportunity for potential sponsors to ask questions or seek clarifications, moving the conversation forward.
  • Closes the Loop: Sometimes, decisions are delayed due to internal processes or pending approvals. Following up can speed up this timeline by reminding the potential sponsor of pending tasks.

Best Practices for Effective Follow-Ups

  • Timing: The general rule of thumb is to wait about a week after sending your initial proposal before following up. This gives the potential sponsor enough time to review your proposal but is not so long that they forget who you are.
  • Method: Email is usually the best medium for the first follow-up. It’s less intrusive than a phone call and gives the recipient the opportunity to respond at their convenience. However, if email fails to elicit a response, a polite phone call can sometimes be more effective.
  • Content: Be concise and to the point. Politely inquire if they’ve had a chance to review your proposal and offer to provide additional information if needed. Always maintain a professional and courteous tone.
  • Personalization: Customize each follow-up to the recipient. Mention any commonalities or past interactions that could make your message more memorable.
  • Frequency: If you don’t get a response to your first follow-up, it’s acceptable to try again after another week or two. However, more than three follow-ups without a response can come across as pushy, so know when to move on.

Building Lasting Relationships

Deliver on Promises

When you secure a sponsorship for your cheer team, it’s more than just a financial transaction—it’s a commitment. You’ve outlined what the sponsor can expect from your team in return for their support, often encapsulated in a formal sponsorship agreement. Failing to deliver on those promises not only risks the current sponsorship but can also tarnish your team’s reputation, making it more difficult to secure future sponsorships. Conversely, fulfilling or exceeding your commitments can pave the way for a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.

The Importance of Delivering on Promises

  • Trust Building: Consistently meeting the terms of your sponsorship agreement establishes trust between your team and the sponsor. Trust is the cornerstone of any business relationship and is especially crucial when financial contributions are involved.
  • Accountability: By fulfilling your promises, you’re demonstrating accountability. It shows you take the sponsorship seriously and are committed to honoring your end of the bargain.
  • Brand Image: Your actions reflect not just on your team but also on your sponsor. If you deliver on your promises, it enhances your sponsor’s brand image as well as your own.
  • Future Partnerships: Sponsors talk, and word gets around. Delivering on your promises can lead to recommendations and introductions, opening doors to additional sponsorships.
  • Renewal Opportunities: Sponsors are more likely to renew their support if they see a tangible return on their investment. Fulfilling your commitments is the first step toward securing future rounds of sponsorship.

How to Ensure You Deliver

  • Clear Understanding: Ensure that all team members and stakeholders understand the terms of the sponsorship agreement. This includes what is expected of the team and by when.
  • Task Delegation: Assign specific tasks related to the sponsorship to individual team members or committees. For example, if one of the terms is social media promotion, designate someone to manage that aspect.
  • Regular Check-ins: Hold regular meetings to review progress on fulfilling sponsorship terms. This allows for timely adjustments if something is off track.
  • Documentation: Keep a record of all activities related to the sponsorship agreement. This could be in the form of photographs, event attendance logs, or social media posts.
  • Transparency with Sponsor: Keep the lines of communication open with your sponsor. Update them on how their contributions are being used and any milestones reached.
  • Plan for Contingencies: Sometimes, unforeseen circumstances can prevent you from fulfilling a promise. Have a backup plan in place and communicate openly with the sponsor if adjustments need to be made.

Deliver on Promises

Delivering on promises is not just about ticking off boxes on a sponsorship agreement. It’s about building a lasting relationship founded on trust, accountability, and mutual benefit. By consistently meeting or exceeding the terms of your sponsorship agreements, you not only ensure the success of the current partnership but also lay the groundwork for future opportunities. Therefore, take your commitments seriously and make every effort to fulfill them to the best of your ability.

Example Scenario:

Your cheer team has just secured a sponsorship from “CheerGear Co.,” a company specializing in cheerleading apparel. The terms of the sponsorship agreement include:

  • CheerGear Co. will provide uniforms and practice gear for the team.
  • Your cheer team will promote CheerGear Co. on social media at least twice a month.
  • The CheerGear Co. logo will be displayed on banners at all team events.
  • A quarterly update report will be sent to CheerGear Co. detailing how the sponsorship has benefited the team.

Action Steps for Clear Understanding:

  • Team Meeting: Schedule a team meeting specifically to discuss the sponsorship agreement. Provide each team member with a copy of the agreement and go through the terms point by point.
  • Role Assignment:
    • Appoint one team member as the “Social Media Manager” responsible for the bi-monthly social media posts promoting CheerGear Co.
    • Assign another member or a committee to handle event logistics, ensuring that the CheerGear Co. logo is displayed on banners.
    • Designate someone to compile and send the quarterly update report to CheerGear Co.
  • Deadline Setting:
    • Set specific deadlines for each task. For example, decide that social media posts will be made on the first and third Fridays of every month.
    • Establish a quarterly deadline for the update reports, perhaps one week before each quarter ends.
  • Clarification Session: Open the floor for questions and clarifications. Ensure that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities, as well as the timelines.
  • Written Summary: After the meeting, send out a written summary outlining what was discussed, who is responsible for each task, and the respective deadlines. This serves as a reference point and ensures everyone is on the same page.

By taking these steps, you ensure that all team members and stakeholders have a clear understanding of what is expected under the terms of the sponsorship agreement, boosting the likelihood of successful fulfillment.

Keep Them Updated

Following up post-sponsorship is indeed a critical aspect of maintaining a healthy and mutually beneficial relationship with your sponsors. Let’s dive into why this is important and how to go about it effectively

Why Post-Sponsorship Follow-Ups are Crucial

  • Relationship Building: A sponsorship is not a one-time transaction but a relationship that can offer long-term benefits for both parties. Regular follow-ups help maintain and strengthen this relationship.
  • Accountability: You’ve made promises about how the sponsorship funds will be used and what benefits the sponsor will receive. Follow-ups serve as a status report, ensuring both parties are holding up their ends of the agreement.
  • Feedback Loop: Regular communication allows for real-time feedback. If the sponsor has concerns or suggestions, immediate action can be taken to address them.
  • Opens Doors for Future Partnerships: Consistent follow-ups and the successful execution of sponsorship benefits can make it easier to secure renewals or even additional sponsorships from the same partner.
CSR-initiatives

Effective Strategies for Post-Sponsorship Follow-Ups

  • Immediate Acknowledgment: The first follow-up should be immediate—a thank-you note expressing gratitude for the sponsorship as soon as it’s confirmed. This sets a positive tone for the relationship.
  • Progress Reports: Periodically update the sponsor on how their funds are being used. This could be in the form of a monthly report or newsletter that includes key milestones, upcoming events, and even photographic evidence of the sponsorship in action.
  • Event Invitations: If the sponsorship is tied to specific events, such as competitions or fundraisers, extend an invitation to the sponsor to attend. Post-event, share a brief report on the event’s success and how the sponsorship contributed to it.
  • Social Media Shoutouts: Publicly thank your sponsors through social media platforms, tagging their accounts and using relevant hashtags. This not only fulfills part of your end of the sponsorship deal but also offers your sponsors additional exposure.
  • Feedback Surveys: Towards the end of the sponsorship term, consider sending out a feedback survey. Ask the sponsor what they liked about the partnership, what could be improved, and whether they would consider renewing the sponsorship.
  • Renewal Discussions: Don’t wait until the sponsorship term is over to discuss renewal. Start the conversation a few months in advance, so you have ample time to negotiate terms.

Follow-ups after securing a sponsorship are essential for ensuring that your sponsors are satisfied and see the value in their investment.

Attracting sponsorships for your cheer team isn’t just about the money; it’s about building relationships that add value to both parties. By understanding the different types of sponsorships, identifying potential sponsors, crafting compelling proposals, and maintaining strong relationships, you set the stage for a mutually beneficial partnership that can elevate your cheer team to new heights.

So go ahead, put these strategies into action and watch as your cheer team soars—both on the mat and off it.

Being a cheer coach is not just about teaching stunts, choreographing routines, and winning competitions. It also involves navigating the complex landscape of legal responsibilities that come with the role. Understanding the legal aspects of cheer coaching can protect you, your athletes, and your cheer program from unnecessary complications. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the legal facets every cheer coach should be aware of, including liability, safety standards, and intellectual property rights concerning cheer music.

Liability and Negligence

Duty of Care

As a cheer coach, you have a “duty of care” to ensure the well-being of your athletes. This means taking reasonable measures to prevent injuries and accidents. Failure to do so could result in a negligence claim against you or your cheerleading program.

Protecting Yourself

Here’s how to safeguard against liability:

  • Training: Ensure you have the necessary certifications, including First Aid and CPR.
  • Equipment: Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment.
  • Documentation: Keep detailed records of all practices, routines, and safety measures.

Insurance

Investing in liability insurance can offer an additional layer of protection. It may cover legal fees and damages should you face a lawsuit.

Safety Standards

Compliance

In the United States, the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) sets safety guidelines. Being well-versed in these standards is crucial.

Gym Safety

  • Ensure that the practice area is free of hazards.
  • Make sure athletes are wearing appropriate attire and safety gear.

Stunt Safety

  • Always spot athletes during stunts.
  • Do not attempt stunts that are beyond the skill level of your athletes.

Parental Consent and Waivers

Before an athlete participates in any cheerleading activity, it’s essential to obtain written consent from their parents or guardians.

What Should a Waiver Include?

  • A clear explanation of the risks involved in cheerleading.
  • A clause stating that the parent/guardian understands these risks.

Emergency Contact Information

Always have up-to-date emergency contact information for each athlete.

Transportation Laws

Driver Qualifications

Ensure that anyone responsible for transporting athletes has a valid driver’s license and has passed a background check.

Vehicle Safety

Regularly inspect vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards.

Intellectual Property and Music Licensing

Copyright Laws

When using music for routines, be aware of copyright laws. Using copyrighted music without permission can result in legal repercussions.

Customized Cheer Music

One way to avoid copyright issues is by using customized cheer music from reputable sources like IPP Music.

Social Media and Privacy

Personal Information

Be cautious when sharing personal information of athletes on social media platforms.

Photos and Videos

Always obtain consent before posting images or videos of your athletes online.

Federal laws prohibit discrimination based on race, sex, religion, or disability. Make sure your cheer program is inclusive and complies with these laws.

Harassment and Bullying

Create a zero-tolerance policy for harassment and bullying and ensure it is strictly enforced.

Mastering Cheerleading Extensions: A Guide for Flyers with Troublesome Extensions

mastering-extensions-in-cheerleading-tutorial-tips

By Steve Pawlyk

Published September 15, 2023

If you’re a cheerleader struggling with extensions, especially as a flyer, you’re not alone. It’s an area that many flyers find challenging, but it’s crucial for nailing your routine and impressing the judges. Today we’re gonna go over how to improve your extensions, with specific reference to a Reddit post that highlights challenges such as balance issues and hypermobility. Let’s jump right in.

cheer-flyer-extension-guide

The Problem with Extensions

A Reddit user recently highlighted a common issue among flyers — difficulty in maintaining balance during two-leg extensions. Whether it’s wobbling, falling forward, or not being able to keep your feet together, these issues can throw off your entire routine.

The Role of Joint Hypermobility

If you, like the original poster, have excessive joint hypermobility, it’s essential to adapt your technique accordingly. This could mean avoiding locking your knees too tightly, as hyperextension can contribute to imbalance.

Tips for Flyers Struggling with Extensions

  • Find the Sweet Spot: Balance is about weight distribution. Try to find that perfect balance between your heels and toes.
  • Engage Your Core: This is more than just “squeezing”. Your core muscles are essential for stability.
  • Alignment: Ensure that your hips are stacked over your knees and your knees over your ankles.
  • Feedback from Bases: Communication with your bases can offer vital feedback for improving your form.
  • Practice Low: Try practicing the extension at a lower height to build confidence and fine-tune your form.
  • Foot Position: Experiment with keeping your feet at hip-width versus together to see which offers better stability, gradually moving to the desired position.
  • Consult a Specialist: If hypermobility is a concern, consult a physiotherapist familiar with cheerleading injuries.

Takeaway for Coaches

Coaches, if you’re primarily experienced as a base, it may be beneficial to bring in an experienced flyer to provide specific tips to your team. The simple directive to “just squeeze” might not cut it for everyone.

Extensions are a vital part of any cheerleading routine, but they can pose challenges, especially for those new to flying or those with hypermobility. With the right techniques and a bit of focused practice, you can turn your troublesome extensions into a showcase skill. And remember, communication with your team and coach is vital for identifying problems and implementing solutions.

Liability insurance is a type of insurance that helps protect your cheer gym from financial losses if a third party is injured or property is damaged. By Steve Pawlyk

Published September 12, 2023

Cheerleading is a sport that demands not just energy and enthusiasm but also a high level of precision and skill. As a coach, your role is pivotal in ensuring that your athletes are well-equipped to excel. One of the critical skills that often gets overlooked is spotting. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the various facets of spotting, from drills and video analysis to essential safety tips. Let’s dive in!

cheerleading-spotting-how-to

1. Spotting Drills: Building Strength and Trust

What It Is:
Spotting drills serve as the cornerstone for developing the strength, skills, and confidence required for effective spotting. These exercises can be tailored to meet the specific needs of any athlete or squad.

Detailed Example:
Partner drills are excellent for fostering trust between athletes and enhancing their spotting techniques. During these drills, athletes should stand close to the flyer and bend at the knees. They should place their arm around the flyer’s mid-section, ensuring shoulder contact. This helps in mastering various positions, such as jumps or intricate stunts.

2. Video Analysis: A Tool for Precision

What It Is:
Video analysis is an invaluable resource for dissecting and refining a routine. It helps identify areas needing additional spotting assistance and highlights what is already being done correctly.

Detailed Example:
Recording your routine and reviewing it in slow motion allows you to scrutinize whether athletes are effectively spotting each other. It’s crucial to watch the flyer closely and call out stunts audibly enough for everyone to hear.

3. Visualization Techniques: The Power of the Mind

What It Is:

Visualization is a potent tool that can help athletes internalize how to spot each other correctly by imagining themselves executing the moves flawlessly.

Detailed Example:

Encourage your athletes to sit comfortably and visualize themselves performing the stunts. They should focus on details like proper arm and leg positions and imagine the spotter assisting them in landing safely.

4. Spotting Apps: Technology to the Rescue

What It Is:

Spotting apps offer a convenient way for athletes to hone their spotting skills during their personal time. These apps allow you to record your athletes and then view an analysis of accuracy, time, and progression.

Detailed Example:

Skill Shark is an excellent app that includes a range of resources for improving spotting skills. It’s perfect for coaches who want to practice hands-on spotting and get a granular analysis of their progression while learning a new skill.

5. Spotting Harness: Safety First

What It Is:
Spotting harnesses are invaluable for practicing advanced stunts safely. They eliminate the fear of injury, allowing athletes to focus solely on improving their skills.

Detailed Example:
Spotting harnesses come with adjustable straps and padding, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit. They’re ideal for practicing catching the flyer’s head and neck first if they fall and catching them at the highest point possible to slow their descent.

In the fast-paced, competitive world of cheerleading, having the right tools and resources can make or break your team’s success. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a newcomer, this comprehensive guide will equip you with everything you need to excel. Let’s get started!

cheer gym floor

Training Aids

Spring Floors

Why It’s Essential: A quality spring floor provides the necessary bounce and cushioning, reducing the risk of injury. The springs absorb the impact, allowing athletes to perform high-flying stunts and complicated tumbling passes with a lower risk of injury.

How to Employ: When selecting a spring floor, consider factors like spring density, foam thickness, and surface material. Make sure it meets the safety standards set by cheerleading organizations.

Example: A spring floor with a carpet-bonded foam surface can provide both the grip and cushioning needed for intricate stunts and tumbling.

Tumble Tracks

Why It’s Essential: Tumble tracks are inflatable or foam tracks that mimic the feel of a spring floor but are portable. They are excellent for practicing tumbling skills without the hard impact on the body.

How to Employ: Use tumble tracks for focused tumbling practice. They can be set up in gyms, outdoors, or even at home for extra practice.

Example: Use the tumble track to practice back handsprings. The softer surface reduces the fear factor, encouraging athletes to commit to the skill.

Stunt Stands

Why It’s Essential: Stunt stands help athletes practice stunts safely by simulating the hands of bases. They are especially useful for training flyers on balance and body control.

How to Employ: Use stunt stands to isolate specific elements of a stunt, such as the flyer’s body position or the timing of the cradle.

Example: Have your flyer practice liberty stunts on the stunt stand to improve ankle stability and body alignment.

Software Solutions

Routine Choreography Software

Why It’s Essential: Choreography software allows you to design and visualize routines, making the process more efficient and collaborative.

How to Employ: Use the software to map out formations, transitions, and stunts. Share the visualizations with your team for better understanding.

Example: ProCheer software can help you visualize a pyramid sequence, ensuring that all athletes are in the correct positions.

Video Analysis Tools

Why It’s Essential: Video analysis tools like Coach’s Eye enable you to record and analyze performances, providing valuable feedback for improvement.

How to Employ: Record your team’s practice or performance and use the software to break down each element. Look for areas that need improvement, such as timing or technique.

Example: Use Coach’s Eye to analyze the height and form of basket tosses, providing precise feedback to your athletes.

Music and Audio

Customized Cheer Music

Why It’s Essential: Music sets the tone for your routine. Customized cheer music ensures that your soundtrack is unique, engaging, and compliant with copyright laws.

How to Employ: Work with a specialized service like IPP Music to create a customized mix that complements your routine’s theme and tempo.  You can get a fully customized mix, where you pick all the songs used and it’s fit perfectly to your routine, or you can go with a premade mix which is much less, cost-wise, and customize that with one of our many options, like voicoeovers or sound fx.  We’ll add your team name to the mix for just $10!

Example: If your routine has a “Superhero” theme, a customized music mix can incorporate iconic superhero themes with beats that match your choreography.  Alternatively, our premade mixes are sortable by their theme, so you can easily find the right fit for your routine

Portable Speakers

Why It’s Essential: High-quality portable speakers are essential for practice sessions to ensure that the music is loud and clear, allowing athletes to catch musical cues.

How to Employ: Choose speakers with good battery life and sufficient volume range. Place them in a position where the sound evenly covers the practice area.

Example: Use a Bluetooth speaker with a built-in battery for outdoor practices, so you’re not tied down by power outlets.

Safety Gear

Mats

Why It’s Essential: Safety mats provide a cushioned surface for stunting and tumbling, reducing the risk of injury from falls.

How to Employ: Use mats for high-risk elements like pyramids or new stunts that the team is still learning.

Example: Place mats under the stunt group when practicing a new dismount to ensure a softer landing in case of a fall.

Wrist Guards and Ankle Braces

Why It’s Essential: These provide additional support to joints, reducing the risk of sprains and other injuries.

How to Employ: Athletes should wear wrist guards and ankle braces during both practice and performances for added support.

Example: Flyers can wear wrist guards to reduce the impact on their wrists during handstands or other weight-bearing elements.

Books and Journals

Why It’s Essential: Publications like the “Cheer Coach’s Handbook” offer valuable insights into coaching strategies and athlete management.

How to Employ: Use these resources to supplement your knowledge and resolve specific challenges you may face.
