Cheer Competition Scoring Systems: USASF vs. UCA

Cheer Competition Scoring Systems USASF vs UCA

By Steve Pawlyk

Published February 12, 2024

Understanding the intricacies of scoring systems can be as challenging as executing a perfect routine. Lately, social media has been buzzing with coaches expressing confusion over why certain elements are rewarded in one competition but not another, especially when comparing All-Star (USASF) and Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) competitions. This article aims to offer clarity to coaches, athletes, and anybody else who is confused by these systems.

All-Star Scoring

All-Star competitions use a comprehensive scoring system to evaluate routines, focusing on elements such as building skills, tumbling skills, and the overall routine presentation.

competitive cheerleading scoring

The USASF cheerleading score sheet is divided into three main sections: Building Skills (which includes stunts, pyramids, tosses, and the number of athletes performing stunts), Tumbling Skills (encompassing standing tumbling, running tumbling, and jumps), and Overall Routine (which evaluates the routine’s composition, performance, and dance elements). The starting point for teams is typically a base score from which judges can add points for difficulty, execution, and creativity

Scoring emphasizes technique, accounting for a significant portion of the total score. This approach encourages teams to execute skills with precision over merely attempting difficult skills. Judges look for proper technique across all elements, and the scoring system is designed to reward teams that showcase clean, technically sound performances. The creativity and composition of the routine also play a crucial role, influencing the overall impression and effectiveness of the performance.

The United Scoring System, for example, outlines specific criteria for tumbling and jump difficulty, with points allocated based on the number of athletes performing the required skills and the complexity of those skills. This system also includes categories for routine creativity and the execution of formations and transitions, emphasizing the importance of innovation and precision in the routine’s design.

The U.S. All Star Federation (USASF) has developed a standard scoring system for competitive cheerleading, which is centered on level-appropriate skills and difficulty. This system has been collaboratively developed with input from industry experts, coaches, and judges, aiming to foster trust in the judging process and provide teams with a tool for evaluating and improving their performances.

In essence, the USASF score sheet is a detailed framework designed to objectively evaluate the various aspects of a cheerleading routine, from technical execution to artistic expression, ensuring that teams are scored fairly and consistently across competitions.

UCA Scoring System

The Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) utilizes a detailed scoring system for its competitive cheerleading events, which is designed to evaluate teams across a variety of components. The system is structured to ensure that performances are judged fairly and consistently, with a focus on various aspects of cheerleading, including performance routines and game day routines.

For performance routines, the UCA scoring system evaluates teams on a 100-point scale, with specific portions of the score allocated to cheer (35 points) and music sections (65 points). These sections are averaged and then combined for the final score. Deductions or violations are subtracted from the final averaged score. The criteria used for scoring are detailed on the UCA score sheet, which assesses the team’s execution, synchronization, and overall performance quality.

In addition to performance routines, UCA also emphasizes the importance of game day routines, which showcase traditional cheerleading elements such as crowd leading and the use of game day props (signs, poms, flags, megaphones). Teams are judged on their ability to engage the crowd, incorporate game day skills effectively, and their overall routine execution. Skills such as stunts, jumps, tumbling, and dance can be integrated into any or all sections of the game day performance.

UCA’s scoring system also addresses procedural aspects, such as how to handle interruptions during a performance due to unforeseen circumstances, fault of the team, or injury. The guidelines outline the steps to be taken in each scenario, ensuring fairness and safety for all participants.

Cheer UCA scoring system

For more detailed information on UCA’s scoring system, including specific score sheets for different divisions and events, you can visit the UCA section on Varsity’s website. This resource provides comprehensive insights into the rules, scoring, and expectations for teams competing in UCA events, ensuring that coaches and athletes have a clear understanding of what is required to achieve success in competitive cheerleading.

competitive cheerleading scoring

Key Differences and Why They Matter

  • Focus: All-Star competitions prioritize a broad range of skills, including advanced tumbling and acrobatics, rewarding technical difficulty and innovation. UCA competitions, in contrast, emphasize crowd leading abilities and spirit-raising activities, with a significant portion of the score derived from how effectively a team can engage and lead a crowd.
  • Scoring Emphasis: The All-Star system places a larger emphasis on technique and execution over difficulty, whereas UCA balances between cheerleading fundamentals and performance quality, with specific allocations for cheer and music portions.
  • Adaptability: Teams transitioning between these two types of competitions must adapt their routines to meet the distinct scoring criteria. What works in an All-Star competition, focusing on technical prowess and innovation, might not have the same impact in a UCA event, where crowd interaction and traditional cheer elements are key.

Understanding the nuances between the All-Star and UCA scoring systems can help coaches and athletes better prepare for competitions, ensuring their routines are tailored to the specific criteria of each event. By recognizing the unique focus of each system, teams can strategize effectively, enhancing their performance and maximizing their scores across the competitive cheer landscape.

The conversations online highlight a valuable point: success in competitive cheer requires not just athletic excellence but also a strategic approach to choreography and routine planning that aligns with the scoring system of each competition. Whether aiming for the dynamic and technically demanding All-Star events or the spirited and traditional UCA competitions, a sense of clarity on these scoring systems can make all the difference in whether your team hits or not.

Precision: Essential Drills for Flawless Timing in Cheerleading Routines

Precision Essential Drills for Flawless Timing in Cheerleading Routines

By Steve Pawlyk

Published February 6, 2024

Precision and synchronization are not just goals; they are the very essence that differentiates the good teams from the truly outstanding ones. Achieving flawless timing in cheer routines is a testament to a team’s discipline, dedication, and skill. Today we’ll go over some strategies and drills that you can employ at your practices to perfect the timing and synchronization of your squad, featuring expert insights and real-world examples.

The Importance of Precision in Cheerleading

Precision in cheerleading goes beyond the mere execution of movements at the same time. It embodies the unity and cohesiveness of the team, showcasing their ability to move as one entity. This synchronization not only enhances the visual appeal of the routine but also significantly impacts the safety and effectiveness of stunts and tumbling passes. As noted by renowned cheerleading coach and choreographer, Alex Hart, “Precision is the backbone of trust and safety in cheerleading. When timing is off, not only is the visual impact compromised, but athletes are also at a higher risk of injuries.”

Drills to Enhance Timing and Synchronization

Metronome Drills for competitive cheer training

Metronome Drills

Metronome drills stand as a foundational method for instilling rhythm and synchronization within a cheerleading team. By setting a metronome to a specific beat, coaches can mimic the tempo of a routine’s music or the inherent rhythm of the cheer, providing a consistent auditory cue for athletes. Starting with simple movements like claps, steps, or jumps allows the squad to internalize the beat, gradually building up to more complex sequences that include stunts and tumbling. The metronome serves as an impartial, unyielding guide, helping athletes adjust their timing to match the collective beat, ensuring that every movement is executed in harmony.

Counting Aloud Together

I know, I know…counting aloud is an obvious one. When a team vocalizes counts together, it does more than just keep everyone on the same beat; it reinforces the sense of unity and collective effort. However, it’s worth noting that there is an inherent lack of precision to group counting, so it’s best to utilize counting as well as the other techniques mentioned here.

Video Feedback Sessions

In the age of technology, video feedback has become an invaluable tool for coaching. Recording practices and reviewing the footage as a team can provide both athletes and coaches with a clear, objective view of their performance. This visual feedback makes it easier to identify timing discrepancies and coordination issues that may not be apparent from the floor. Watching themselves perform allows athletes to critically assess their timing and synchronization, encouraging self-awareness and fostering a proactive approach to improvement. Moreover, these sessions can be a platform for constructive feedback and collective problem-solving, enhancing the team’s ability to adapt and refine their routines.

The ‘Freeze’ Technique

The ‘Freeze’ technique introduces an element of unpredictability to practice, challenging athletes to maintain their spatial awareness and timing even when the routine is interrupted. By randomly calling out ‘freeze,’ coaches can simulate the unexpected moments that might occur during a performance, training athletes to stay in control and in sync, even under pressure. This drill not only sharpens an athlete’s focus and awareness but also reinforces muscle memory, ensuring that each position within the routine is precise and deliberate.

Cheer Team Video Feedback Sessions

Segmentation and Isolation

Breaking down routines into smaller segments addresses the complexity of cheerleading performances, where multiple elements are often executed simultaneously. By focusing on one segment at a time, teams can perfect the timing and execution of each part before connecting them into a full routine. This methodical approach allows for targeted improvements, ensuring that each section of the routine meets the team’s standards for precision and synchronization.

Isolation drills further refine an athlete’s control over their movements by focusing on specific body parts. By isolating arms or legs, for instance, athletes can work on the precision of their movements without the distraction of executing a full routine. This focus on individual elements contributes to the overall cleanliness and sharpness of the team’s performance, as each movement becomes more intentional and controlled.

The Assembly line

Cody Woodfell of Cheer Factory has a similar strategy he refers to as “The Assembly Line” involving incremental improvement of minute details each week.  He wrote an article for us back in 2018 regarding this method, which you can read here.

USA Cheer

The 2019 World Cheerleading Championships served as a spectacular stage for the USA Cheer Team to demonstrate the pinnacle of cheerleading excellence. Their performance was not just a display of athleticism and spirit but a masterclass in the art of precision and synchronization. This achievement was the culmination of countless hours of focused training, where rigorous timing drills and synchronization practices played a central role.

Precision in Synchronized Tumbling Passes

One of the most striking aspects of the USA Cheer Team’s routine was their synchronized tumbling passes. Tumbling, an element that requires both individual skill and acute awareness of one’s teammates, was executed with such flawless timing that each pass seemed to mirror the others perfectly. This level of synchronization does not happen overnight. It is the result of dedicated practice, where athletes work not only on perfecting their own skills but also on aligning their movements with the team. The tumbling drills likely focused on timing the takeoff and landing moments, ensuring that each member hit their marks at the exact same time. Such precision enhances the visual impact of the routine and demonstrates a high level of team cohesion and discipline.

Top-Gun All-Stars

Another notable example is the Top Gun All-Stars, renowned for their innovative and precise routines. Their coach, Victor Rosario, emphasizes the importance of consistency in practice, stating, “Repetition with purpose is what leads to the kind of timing and precision that wins championships.”

This approach is more than just a mantra; it’s a detailed methodology that underscores every aspect of their training regimen. Rosario’s strategy involves a rigorous, disciplined practice schedule where every movement and sequence is drilled repeatedly until it reaches a level of precision that meets the team’s high standards. However, it’s not repetition for the sake of repetition. Each practice session is designed with a specific goal in mind, whether it’s improving the sharpness of their movements, enhancing the synchronization of a stunt group, or perfecting the timing of their tumbling passes. This purposeful practice ensures that every athlete understands the importance of their role within the team and how their individual efforts contribute to the collective performance.

Rosario encourages his athletes to view each repetition as an opportunity to refine their skills and to understand the intricate timing and spatial awareness required to execute their routines flawlessly. This has fostered a culture of excellence within the Top Gun All-Stars, where athletes push each other to achieve perfection, understanding that their collective success is dependent on the precision of their individual performances.

Top Gun Training Techniques

The impact of this approach was evident in their performance at the Cheerleading Worlds, where the Top Gun All-Stars showcased a routine that was a masterclass in precision and synchronization. Every stunt, tumbling pass, and dance move was executed with such meticulous timing that it seemed as though the team moved as one entity, leaving both the audience and the judges in awe. Their performance underscored the effectiveness of Rosario’s method, demonstrating how consistent, purposeful practice could elevate a team to the pinnacle of cheerleading excellence.

Incorporating these drills and strategies into your training routine will not only enhance the precision and synchronization of your cheerleading team but also build a stronger, more cohesive unit capable of more than the sum of its parts. The path to impeccable timing is a journey of consistent practice & keen attention to detail. Try to see the details you’ve been missing and address them one by one using the methods we mentioned above.  Good luck!

Fusion Elite All Stars vs Varsity Brands

Varsity vs Fusion Elite Decision

By Steve Pawlyk

Published January 17, 2024

Competitive cheer has been significantly impacted by a major antitrust lawsuit, Fusion Elite All Stars, et.al. v. Varsity Brands LLC, et.al. This case, which has garnered substantial attention within the cheerleading community, involves allegations of monopolistic practices against Varsity Brands, a prominent company in the All Star Cheerleading industry. The lawsuit was brought forth by All Star gyms and All Star event spectators, accusing Varsity Brands of unfair business practices in collaboration with the US All-Star Federation (USASF).

Fusion allstars cheerleader

Background of the Case

Varsity Brands, known for its influence in the cheerleading competition and apparel markets, has been accused of colluding with the USASF to monopolize the All Star Cheer Events market. The plaintiffs in the case alleged that Varsity Brands engaged in systematic acquisitions of rival event companies, imposed exclusionary contracts and loyalty programs on All Star gyms, and used the USASF to control bids to key national championships.

Settlement and Its Terms

In a significant development, Varsity Brands agreed to pay $43.5 million to settle this long-running antitrust class action. As part of the settlement, Varsity and USASF agreed to several conditions to reduce Varsity’s influence over the sport’s governing body. Notable terms include preventing Varsity board members from simultaneously serving on USASF’s board, limiting Varsity’s participation in USASF’s board and sanctioning committee, and restrictions on requiring attendance at All Star events for receiving rebates or discounts.

Implications for Competitive Cheerleading

The implications of the Fusion Elite All Stars v. Varsity Brands case for competitive cheerleading are profound and multifaceted, affecting market dynamics, governance, fairness, and legal precedent. Let’s delve deeper into each of these aspects:

1. Market Dynamics

The settlement in this antitrust lawsuit is expected to significantly alter the competitive landscape of cheerleading events. Prior to this case, Varsity Brands held a dominant position in the market, which may have limited competition and innovation. With the new terms set by the settlement:

  • Increased Competition: There will likely be more opportunities for new and smaller event organizers to enter the market. This could lead to a greater variety of competitions, potentially at different price points and with varied formats, benefiting teams and athletes.
  • Diverse Event Offerings: Teams and athletes might have access to a wider range of events, including those with different judging criteria or focusing on various aspects of cheerleading, such as stunting or choreography.
  • Enhanced Innovation: With increased competition, event organizers might innovate more in terms of event management, athlete experience, and audience engagement.

2. Governance and Fairness

The case underscores the critical need for fair and transparent governance within sports organizations. As a result of the lawsuit:

  • Governance Reforms: The cheerleading industry might see reforms in how governing bodies like USASF operate, with a push for more democratic and transparent decision-making processes.
  • Athlete-Centric Policies: There could be a shift towards more athlete-centric policies, ensuring that the needs and rights of athletes are at the forefront of all decisions.
  • Fair Access and Opportunities: The case may lead to more equitable rules regarding team participation in events, ensuring that all teams have a fair chance to compete and succeed, regardless of their affiliation with specific organizations.

3. Legal Precedent

The settlement sets a significant legal precedent, particularly concerning antitrust issues in amateur and semi-professional sports:

  • Broader Implications for Sports Law: This case may influence future antitrust cases in other sports, serving as a reference point for how monopolistic practices are addressed in the sporting domain.
  • Empowering Smaller Entities: Smaller teams and organizations now have a precedent to reference if they face similar issues, potentially leading to more legal challenges against dominant players in various sports.
  • Awareness and Education: The publicity surrounding this case raises awareness among athletes, coaches, and sports administrators about antitrust laws and their applicability to the sports sector.

The Fusion Elite All Stars v. Varsity Brands case marks a turning point in the cheer industry. Its resolution not only impacts Varsity Brands and the USASF but also sets a framework for how competitive sports organizations should operate in a fair and competitive environment. As the cheerleading community adapts to these changes, it paves the way for a more equitable and dynamic future for the

Australian Cheer Rising Stars Legends

By Steve Pawlyk

Published January 15, 2024

From the inspiring story of Mia Wansbrough who lead Southern Cross Lady Reign to a historic victory, to the young and formidable Matilda Karipa dominating the under 12 Novice Youth Division, today we’re gonna discuss the athletes of note in Australia’s cheer world. Highlighting the discipline of Atomic Blackout, as they balance the physical demands and financial commitments of cheer with their deep passion for the sport. As well as the notable achievements of the Australian Cheer Union (ACU) at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships, and the ambitious journey of a young talent, Loghan Sculthorpe, aiming for international glory. Together, these stories paint a vivid picture of the resilience, dedication, and community spirit that underpin Australian cheer.

Mia Wansbrough Cheerleading

The Story of Mia Wansbrough and Southern Cross Lady Reign

Mia Wansbrough’s journey with the Southern Cross Lady Reign team to the 2021 International Cheerleading Worlds is a remarkable tale of resilience, innovation, and triumph. At 23, Mia balanced her dedication to cheerleading with academic pursuits, having recently graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Genetics. Her academic focus on the genetic variation in thermal plasticity of Drosophila melanogaster during her honors in genetics complemented her rigorous training for the world championship.

As the pandemic hit, Mia and her Melbourne-based team faced unprecedented challenges. They adapted to the new norm of remote training, practicing their high-energy routines via Zoom. Their living rooms and backyards became their new training grounds, and they transformed the limitations into opportunities for growth and innovation.

The 2021 International Cheerleading Worlds, held virtually due to COVID-19, posed a unique challenge as teams had to perform in the absence of the electrifying atmosphere typically found in a live competition setting. Mia, as a “flier” for Southern Cross Lady Reign, had to adapt her routines for a virtual format, performing intricate mid-air maneuvers without the physical presence of her teammates. Their training sessions in an empty gym in Northcote starkly contrasted the vibrant Wide World of Sports arena at Disney World in Florida, where the event was initially planned to be held.

Despite these obstacles, the team’s resilience shone through. Under the guidance of their coach, Momoko Hamaguchi, they not only maintained but strengthened their team bond. Mia, alongside her teammate Caitlin Dagher, a law/psychology student, exemplified the team’s spirit and determination. Their hard work culminated in a historic victory, earning the first gold medal for an Australian team in this prestigious event.

Mia’s dual dedication to her academic career as a Research Officer at Monash University and her passion for cheerleading epitomizes the multifaceted nature of modern athletes. Her story with Southern Cross Lady Reign is an inspiration, demonstrating that with hard work, adaptability, and team unity, athletes can overcome even the most daunting challenges and achieve greatness.

Matilda Karipa

Matilda Karipa, a young cheerleader from Caboolture, Australia, has shown remarkable talent and dedication in the world of competitive cheerleading. At just 7 years old, Matilda and her All-Star cheerleading team, The Commanders, achieved impressive success by winning gold medals in all five major cheer competitions they entered this year. These competitions included State, National, and Majors, where they competed in the under 12 Novice Youth Division. This success marks Matilda’s first year in competitive cheerleading, a step up from the semi-competitive Cheer Sport category she participated in for the previous two years.

Driven by her passion for cheerleading, Matilda transitioned from gymnastics to cheerleading, finding it at her dance academy. She quickly excelled in the sport, even competing with a broken arm from an unrelated injury, showcasing her resilience and commitment. Despite being the youngest and smallest on her team, Matilda’s role as a flyer places her at the top of the pyramid, performing her favorite stunts. She dreams of someday competing in America and continues to practice cheerleading alongside her other passion, horse riding.

Matilda’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and a love for the sport, making her an inspiration to aspiring young cheerleaders everywhere

The Australian cheerleading team Atomic Blackout has been making waves with their dynamic and thrilling performances. As described in a YouTube video, the team’s routines are a blend of fear and excitement, especially for the flyers who kickstart the performances with tumbling, followed by pyramid formations that can reach up to three stories high, involving three or four groups. The routine concludes with a massive dance sequence, captivating the audience with their energy and precision.

Loghan Sculthorpe

Loghan Sculthorpe, a 13-year-old cheerleading talent from Port Macquarie, Australia, is embarking on an inspiring journey to represent Australia at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Cheerleading Championships 2024 in Orlando, Florida. This prestigious event offers Loghan an unparalleled opportunity to showcase her skills on an international stage.

To make this dream a reality, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to cover the costs associated with international travel and training. These expenses include flights, accommodations, competition fees, and other related costs. The fundraising effort is a testament to the community’s support for Loghan’s aspirations and the recognition of their potential in the sport of cheer. Matilda’s early achievements, despite being new to the competitive scene, highlight the potential and tenacity of young athletes in the sport. Atomic Blackout’s disciplined approach and commitment to training, alongside their financial sacrifices, showcase the serious athletic rigor of cheerleading in Australia. The Rise of Specialization in Cheerleading Coaching

Rise of Specialization in Cheerleading Coaching

By Steve Pawlyk

Published December 7, 2023

In the ever-evolving realm of cheerleading, the trend of specialization among coaches is reshaping the landscape. With cheerleading’s growing complexity, coaches focusing on specific niches such as stunt technique, choreography, or team dynamics are becoming increasingly valuable. This article explores the burgeoning world of specialized cheerleading coaching and its impact on both athletes and the sport itself.

Cheerleading Choreography

The Shift Towards Specialization:

Gone are the days when a one-size-fits-all approach sufficed in cheerleading coaching. The landscape of cheerleading has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a predominantly spirit-oriented activity into a highly competitive and athletic sport. This evolution demands a more nuanced approach to coaching, where specialization is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity.

In response to this shift, coaches are increasingly focusing on specific aspects of cheerleading. This move towards specialization is driven by the recognition that the diverse elements of cheerleading, such as tumbling, stunting, and dance, require distinct skills and knowledge. By concentrating on a particular niche, coaches can offer more in-depth and advanced training, tailored to the unique needs and goals of their athletes.

For instance, tumbling specialists are equipping athletes with advanced gymnastic skills, ensuring they execute flips and tumbles with precision and safety. Similarly, coaches with a focus on stunting are delving into the mechanics of lifts and throws, emphasizing technique and teamwork essential for executing complex stunts successfully.

Moreover, the intricate choreography of modern cheer routines demands a creative and artistic approach. Coaches specializing in choreography are blending athletic rigor with expressive elements to create captivating performances. This specialization not only enhances the visual appeal of routines but also contributes to higher scores in competitions, where originality and creativity are highly valued.

The trend towards specialization also acknowledges the growing competitive nature of cheerleading. As the sport garners more recognition and becomes increasingly popular, the competition intensifies. Specialized coaches are thus vital in helping teams and individual athletes gain a competitive edge, offering training that is both cutting-edge and specific to the demands of modern cheerleading.

Benefits of Niche Coaching

Specialized coaching in cheerleading offers a multitude of benefits, both for the athletes and the sport as a whole. By focusing on a specific niche, coaches transform into experts in their field, bringing a depth of knowledge and skill that is unparalleled. This level of expertise is crucial in a sport as multifaceted and dynamic as cheerleading.

1. Enhanced Skill Development:

Specialized coaches possess a deep understanding of their chosen area, whether it’s tumbling, stunting, or choreography. This allows them to impart high-level skills to their athletes, tailored to the specific demands of that discipline. Athletes benefit from training that is not just general in nature but is specifically designed to enhance their abilities in a particular aspect of cheerleading.

2. Improved Performance and Competitive Edge:

As coaches concentrate on their specialty, they can refine their athletes’ techniques to a much higher degree. This leads to improved overall performance, as athletes are not just competent but excel in specific elements of cheerleading. In the competitive arena, this can be the difference between a good routine and a great one, giving teams an edge over their rivals.

3. Boosted Safety:

One of the paramount benefits of niche coaching is enhanced safety. Specialized coaches are well-versed in the safety protocols and techniques specific to their area. For instance, a coach specializing in stunts will have an in-depth understanding of how to execute these elements safely, reducing the risk of injury. This focus on safety is vital in a sport that involves high-risk elements.

Expert Cheerleading Coaches

4. Personalized Attention to Athletes:

Specialization allows coaches to provide more personalized attention to their athletes. They can identify individual strengths and weaknesses within their specialty, offering tailored advice and training. This personalized approach helps athletes develop more rapidly and effectively.

Cheerleading is a sport that continuously evolves. Specialized coaches stay abreast of the latest techniques and trends in their niche, ensuring that their athletes are learning the most current and effective methods. This continuous learning keeps teams innovative and progressive.

6. Building Athlete Confidence:

When athletes train under specialized coaches, they gain confidence in their abilities. Knowing they are receiving top-tier training in their specific area of cheerleading makes athletes more confident in their performance, which is often reflected in how they execute their routines.

Stunt Technique Mastery:

The mastery of stunts is not just about executing high-flying feats; it’s about combining skill, precision, and safety. Coaches who specialize in stunt technique play a crucial role in revolutionizing how teams perform these complex routines.

USASF Safety Rules

Safety is paramount in stunt execution. Specialists ensure that all stunts are performed within safety guidelines, and they train athletes in proper techniques to minimize the risk of injury. This includes teaching correct spotting techniques, where spotters learn how to effectively support and catch flyers, and ensuring that all team members understand their role in each stunt.

3. Progressive Skill Development:

Coaches should adopt a progressive approach to teaching stunts, starting with basic techniques and gradually moving to more complex ones as the athletes’ skills and confidence grow. This step-by-step approach helps in building a strong foundation, reducing the risk of injury, and ensuring long-term development.

By Steve Pawlyk

Published December 1, 2023

Monica Aldama, the renowned coach of the Navarro College cheerleading team, has announced her retirement, marking the end of an illustrious career that redefined cheerleading at the collegiate level. Aldama’s journey with Navarro College, her contributions to the sport, and the controversies that surrounded her tenure offer a compelling narrative of triumph, challenge, and transformation in the world of competitive cheerleading.

Monica Aldama: A Legacy in Cheerleading

Alright, let’s dive into Monica Aldama’s incredible journey in cheerleading. Think about this: she steps in as the coach of the Navarro College cheer team in the late ’90s, and what she does next is nothing short of remarkable.

Imagine taking a team and not just making it good, but turning it into a national sensation, a real powerhouse in the world of cheerleading. That’s exactly what Aldama did. Under her guidance, Navarro College became a name synonymous with excellence in cheerleading. It’s like she had the Midas touch, but for cheer routines!

Now, let’s talk numbers because they’re just mind-blowing. Seventeen National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) National Championships in the Advanced Large Co-Ed Division. That’s not just winning; that’s dominating. And six “Grand National” Championships! Think about it — her teams weren’t just beating other community colleges; they were outscoring the big guns, the NCAA Division I teams. That’s like a David and Goliath story, but David keeps winning year after year.

What’s really cool about Aldama’s legacy is how she changed the game. It wasn’t just about the physical aspects of cheerleading, the stunts, and the routines. She brought in this level of strategy, precision, and team spirit that elevated the whole sport. It’s like she looked at cheerleading and said, “Let’s take this to the next level.”

Her impact goes beyond just the trophies and the titles. She inspired a generation of cheerleaders and coaches. With Aldama at the helm, Navarro cheerleaders knew they weren’t just part of a team; they were part of a legacy. That’s a powerful thing. It’s about building something that lasts, something that others look up to and aspire to be a part of.

So, the year 2000 was a big one for them. They didn’t just win at the NCA College Nationals; they smashed records. We’re talking an all-time high score kind of smashing. That’s like hitting a home run in the bottom of the ninth in the World Series, but in cheerleading. It was a huge moment and really put them on the map in a big way.

Rise to National Prominence

Monica Aldama and her Navarro cheer squad, they were something else. You know how some teams are just good, and then there are those that are like a force of nature? That was them under Aldama’s leadership.

And Aldama, well, she wasn’t just a coach. She was a builder of champions. Her approach, her dedication, it wasn’t just about creating a winning team for a season. She was all about setting this incredibly high standard that would last. It’s like she had this recipe for success, and she kept refining it year after year.

Her impact was so huge that in 2019, she was inducted into the Navarro College Athletics Hall of Fame. That’s a big honor, you know. It’s like the college saying, “You’re not just a part of our history; you helped write it.” For Aldama, it was a recognition of not just the titles and the trophies, but of the legacy she was building in cheerleading. She wasn’t just a coach at that point; she was a legend in the sport.

“Cheer” – A Pop-Culture Phenomenon

Now let’s talk about “Cheer!” You know, before this Netflix docuseries hit the screens in 2020, most people didn’t really get a behind-the-scenes look at competitive cheerleading. But “Cheer” changed all that. It was like suddenly flipping on a light in a room that most of the world didn’t even know existed.

This show wasn’t just about stunts and pom-poms. It dove deep into the blood, sweat, and tears that go into those routines. Monica Aldama and her Navarro cheer team, they were the stars of this show. It gave us a glimpse of their world – the intense training, the dedication, and the sheer willpower it takes to be at the top of this sport. We’re talking about grueling practices, personal sacrifices, and a kind of team spirit that’s really more like a family.

And Monica Aldama, she wasn’t just a coach on this show. She came off as a mentor, a mother figure, and a tough-love giver all rolled into one. Viewers got to see how her leadership and passion were key ingredients in the team’s success. It was inspiring, really.

The impact of “Cheer”? Huge. I mean, Aldama and her team went from being champions in the cheer world to becoming household names. They were on talk shows like Good Morning America and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Imagine going from cheering on the sidelines to being the one everyone’s cheering for on national TV!

And then Aldama on “Dancing with the Stars”? That was like the cherry on top. She took her competitive spirit from the gym mat to the dance floor, showing a whole new audience her talent and charisma. It’s one thing to coach athletes to be their best, but it’s another to put yourself out there and compete in a totally different arena.

So, “Cheer” was more than just a docuseries. It was a cultural phenomenon that put cheerleading in the spotlight, showed the world the real deal about this sport, and turned Monica Aldama and her Navarro team into icons. It’s amazing how a show can not only entertain but also change perceptions and bring well-deserved recognition to a sport and its athletes.

Challenges and Controversies

Monica Aldama’s time as the coach of Navarro College’s cheerleading team was quite a rollercoaster, you know. It wasn’t all just about winning championships and Netflix fame. The world of cheerleading, especially at the elite level where Navarro competed, came under a lot of scrutiny, and Aldama’s team was right in the middle of it.

First off, there was this major shockwave sent through the cheer world with the Jerry Harris case. Harris, a former member of Aldama’s Navarro cheerleading squad, got into serious legal trouble for soliciting sex from minors. This was a huge deal because it raised a lot of questions about safety and oversight in cheer programs. I mean, here was this rising star in cheerleading, featured on a popular Netflix show, and suddenly he’s in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It really shook the community and undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on Aldama as the coach.

Then, there’s this whole lawsuit saga. A former cheerleader at Navarro brought up some pretty serious allegations against Aldama, accusing her of covering up a sexual assault case. That’s a heavy accusation, right? And it’s not just about Aldama herself, but it also puts the spotlight on how these kinds of situations are handled in cheerleading programs. Navarro College, where Aldama coached, flat-out denied any wrongdoing, but the lawsuit did highlight something important. It showed that maybe there’s a need for stronger measures to protect athletes in cheerleading, to make sure their well-being is always top priority.

So yeah, while Aldama’s career had its high points, it also had these significant challenges. They kind of serve as a reminder that even in something as spirited and competitive as cheerleading, there are serious issues that need attention. It’s not just about the glitz and the trophies; there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that we need to think about.

The Throw: The Physics of Cheerleading Lifts and Practical Training Techniques

The Throw The Physics of Cheerleading Lifts and Practical Training Techniques tips

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 17, 2023

The captivating moment when a cheerleader is launched into the air during a stunt is the result of a precise application of physics principles between the base and the flyer. Understanding the mechanics behind this can vastly improve technique, safety, and performance. This article dives deep into the physics of the cheerleading throw and offers practical methods for coaches to enhance the training of their athletes.

The Fundamentals of Physics in Cheer Throws

Before delving into the training methods, it’s crucial to comprehend the basic physics at play. The throw involves concepts of force, energy, momentum, and angular momentum. Here, we’ll break down these principles and explain how they work in unison to execute a flawless lift.

physics of cheerleading

Optimizing Force and Energy Transfer

The success of a throw hinges on the efficient transfer of energy from the base to the flyer. We will discuss how bases can optimize their application of force to maximize the height and stability of the throw, focusing on the timing, angle, and the explosive power needed.

The Technique Behind Momentum

Momentum is the product of mass and velocity and is conserved in the closed system of a base and flyer. Coaches can use drills to teach bases how to effectively transfer linear momentum to the flyer, ensuring a vertical lift that makes for an impressive stunt.

The spectacle of a cheerleader soaring gracefully through the air is a testament to the strength, timing, and precision cultivated through rigorous training. Strength and conditioning, drill repetition, and the correct application of force are the pillars of an effective cheer throw. This article will expand on these components to provide a comprehensive guide for cheerleading coaches aiming to refine the explosive power and synchronicity of their squad’s lifts.

Building a Foundation with Strength and Conditioning

The prowess of a cheerleading base begins with a robust foundation of physical strength, particularly in the legs and core. This is crucial for two reasons: it provides the power needed for a strong lift-off and ensures the stability required to support and control the throw. Here are key exercises to incorporate into a cheerleader’s regimen:

  • Squats and Deadlifts: These compound movements are excellent for building leg strength. They mimic the lifting action of a cheer throw, engaging the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles.
  • Plyometrics: Exercises like box jumps and jump squats train fast-twitch muscle fibers, essential for the explosive power needed in a lift-off.
  • Core Workouts: Planks, Russian twists, and hanging leg raises build the core stability that bases need to maintain balance and control during a throw.

Perfecting the Art through Drill Repetition

Drill repetition is about creating muscle memory so that each movement becomes second nature, allowing for flawless execution during the high pressure of performances. Repetitive practice drills that focus on timing and coordination are vital:

  • Simulated Throws: Practice the motion of throws without the flyer to perfect the base’s technique and build endurance.
  • Timing Drills: Use metronomes or music to cue bases on when to initiate and release the throw, training them to act in unison.
  • Coordination Exercises: Group exercises where bases lift objects in sync can improve the collective coordination needed for synchronized throws.
angular momentum cheerleading

The Science of Force Application

Teaching bases how to uniformly and directionally apply force can make the difference between a mediocre and a spectacular stunt. The uniform application of force ensures the flyer’s safety and the stunt’s success. Here are strategies to enhance this skill:

improve cheer technique
  • Directional Drills: Use targeted exercises to train bases on applying force in a consistent direction, which is often vertical for maximum height.
  • Resistance Training: Implement resistance bands or light weights to simulate the resistance a base feels when lifting a flyer.
  • Consistent Practice with Flyers: There’s no substitute for the real thing. Regular practice with flyers allows bases to adjust their force application in real-time, attuning to the flyer’s weight and movement dynamics.

Integrating Training into Routine Workouts

Incorporating these elements into a routine workout can lead to significant improvements:

  • Circuit Training: Create a circuit that includes leg and core strength exercises, plyometrics, and drill repetitions for a comprehensive workout.
  • Progressive Overload: Gradually increase the intensity and complexity of exercises to continuously challenge the athletes and promote strength gains.
  • Recovery and Mobility: Incorporate adequate rest and mobility work to prevent injury and ensure that athletes can perform movements with full range of motion.

Safety First: Ensuring a Secure Practice Environment

No discussion of cheerleading technique would be complete without a strong emphasis on safety. This section will cover the essential safety measures coaches must enforce, from proper spotting to ensuring that all stunts are practiced with mats and in a suitable environment.

Cheerleading throws are a complex blend of artistry and physics. By applying these principles in a structured training regimen, coaches can elevate their athletes’ performance and safety. This article serves as a guide to the scientific and practical aspects of cheerleading throws, providing coaches with the knowledge and tools to refine their team’s stunts to perfection.

Following these practices will minimize technical glitches and secure a performance that is as flawless technically as it is athletically.

Advantages of Using an MP3 Player

While smartphones have become the Swiss Army knife of technology, MP3 players still hold their ground, especially in scenarios demanding uninterrupted audio play, such as cheer competitions.

cheer competition music
  • Dedicated Use: MP3 players offer a single-use focus that smartphones can’t match. They are designed for one thing and one thing only: playing music. This specialization means there’s no risk of a surprise call or text popping up and disrupting a critical moment in a performance.
  • Battery Longevity: Unlike smartphones, which juggle countless tasks and apps, MP3 players are battery misers. They are built to last much longer on a single charge, ensuring that the device won’t die just as the team hits the mat.
  • User-Friendly Interfaces: The simplicity of MP3 players is their hidden strength. In the high-stakes environment of a cheer competition, the last thing a coach needs is to fumble through complex menus. MP3 players usually offer straightforward navigation that can be a lifesaver under pressure.
  • Universal Connectivity: The humble 3.5mm jack is nearly universal in MP3 players, which means virtually any sound system can interface with them without a hitch. This can be a boon in venues where the sound engineer’s setup might not be compatible with the various connectors of the latest smartphones.

In essence, an MP3 player is a coach’s reliable ally, ensuring that the music will play on cue, as planned, without any of the modern-day technological hiccups that can accompany a smartphone.

While mobile devices offer convenience, the distinct advantages of MP3 players make them a worthy consideration for any cheer coach looking to ensure a seamless performance. By using the right apps and following best practices for device handoff, coaches can minimize technical disruptions and keep the focus on the athletes’ performance.

Optimizing Gym Workouts for Cheerleading Back Spots

Gym Workouts for Cheerleading Back Spots

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 14, 2023

Transitioning to the role of a back spot in cheerleading presents unique physical demands that go beyond general gym knowledge. Understanding the specific strength and conditioning needed can enhance performance and prevent injury. In this article, we explore targeted exercises that align with the skills required for back spotting, ensuring you’re not only gym-strong but also mat-ready.

Body:

The Role of a Back Spot:

A back spot is pivotal for the stability and safety of stunts. While there are similarities with one-man stunting, including the need for upper body strength and coordination, the back spot’s role is distinct in its requirements for balance, timing, and the ability to support and lift flyers.

cheerleading back spot

Gym Exercises for Back Spots:

To prepare for this role, a comprehensive workout routine that includes the following exercises is recommended:

  • Pull Exercises:
    • Pull-Ups/Chin-Ups: These exercises strengthen the lats, biceps, and grip, which are essential for holding and lifting a flyer.
    • Rows: Both barbell and dumbbell rows will develop the back muscles necessary for maintaining stunt stability.
    • Deadlifts: They target the posterior chain, providing the foundational strength needed for lifting and supporting weight.
  • Core Stability Workouts:
    • Planks: To develop endurance in the core muscles.
    • Russian Twists: These will build rotational strength, important for adjusting and stabilizing stunts.
  • Leg Strength and Power:
    • Squats: Fundamental for developing leg strength to lift and support flyers from below.
    • Box Jumps: To enhance explosive power, which is vital for quick movements during stunts.

Balanced Training Approach:

Training as a back spot in cheerleading requires a well-rounded fitness regime that not only builds muscle but also promotes harmony and balance in the body. This means integrating a mix of push and pull exercises into your workout routine. Push exercises, like push-ups and overhead presses, develop the chest, shoulders, and triceps, which are crucial for motions like hand-offs and extensions. Pull exercises, on the other hand, such as those suggested in the commenter’s advice—like rows and pull-ups—strengthen the back, biceps, and forearms, essential for the act of catching and stabilizing flyers.

Why is this balance important? Overemphasis on push movements without adequate pull exercises can lead to muscle imbalances, which in turn may cause poor posture—rounded shoulders, a forward head position—and increase the risk of injuries due to overuse of certain muscle groups. A balanced approach ensures that opposing muscle groups are equally strong, promoting better posture and more effective force generation, which is essential when you’re the foundation of a stunt.

In addition to muscular balance, incorporating flexibility training into your regimen is non-negotiable. A back spot must have a full range of motion to perform the intricate movements required in cheerleading. Flexibility exercises, like dynamic stretching and yoga, can enhance muscle elasticity, which allows for deeper squats, higher lifts, and more controlled catches. These exercises also aid in recovery and help prevent injuries by allowing muscles to work more effectively.

gym training for cheer

The Backbone of Cheer Stunts:

As the backbone of cheer stunts, the back spot’s role is as much about power and precision as it is about being the central point of stability and safety. Your training should, therefore, reflect the multifaceted nature of your role. This means focusing on developing the raw strength needed to lift and support flyers but also the stability to manage dynamic movements and the nuanced ability to adjust to the flyer’s motion mid-air.

A comprehensive gym regimen for a back spot should simulate the demands of cheerleading. This could include exercises that mimic the movements of stunts, like weighted squats that replicate the lifting of a flyer, and balance training that helps you remain steady on your feet no matter what’s happening above you. By preparing your body to handle the various challenges of being a back spot, you’ll be ready to support your team in every lift and stunt, ensuring that each performance is executed with confidence and skill.

Regaining Your Flexibility for Cheer

Regaining Your Flexibility for Cheer A Comprehensive Guide

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 14, 2023

Many athletes find themselves in a common predicament—regaining lost flexibility. Flexibility is a cornerstone of cheerleading, essential for executing stunts, tumbling, and jumps with grace and precision. In this guide, we delve into targeted stretches and strategies to enhance your flexibility, focusing on hips and arms, ensuring you’re tryout-ready by March.

flexibility training

Understanding Flexibility in Cheerleading:

Flexibility in cheerleading is multifaceted; it encompasses more than the ability to stretch muscles. It’s about achieving optimal mobility—where muscles and joints work in unison to allow for complete, fluid movements that are essential in cheer routines.

Additionally, flexibility is deeply intertwined with strength; it’s not enough to merely be able to reach a position. A cheerleader must have the muscular strength to hold that position, perform it with control, and transition in and out of it with precision.

A high V or a heel stretch, for instance, isn’t solely about the ability to lift the leg high but also about the control and stability in the supporting leg, the strength in the core to maintain posture, and the arm strength to hold the pose. Similarly, when maintaining balance in scales and arabesques, a cheerleader must engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, ensuring that each movement is as deliberate as it is graceful.

The integration of flexibility and strength is what allows cheerleaders to perform with the athleticism and artistry that the sport demands. To achieve this, cheerleaders must focus on a holistic flexibility routine that not only increases the range of motion but also builds the strength and control needed to execute complex cheer movements effectively and safely.

Tailored Stretching Regimen:

To regain your flexibility, a structured routine is pivotal, one that progressively enhances your capacity for cheer-specific movements. Here’s a closer look at the essential stretches:

Bridges: An exemplary stretch for cheerleaders, bridges target spinal flexibility, which is a fundamental aspect of tumbling and performing backbends. When you practice bridges, you’re not only increasing the flexibility of your spine but also strengthening your back muscles. This dual benefit is crucial because a strong back enables you to safely perform a wide array of cheer motions, from back walkovers to layouts, reducing the risk of injury.

Splits (Front and Middle): Splits are a definitive stretch that test and improve the elasticity of your hip flexors, hamstrings, and adductors. Consistently practicing both front and middle splits ensures that you develop flexibility evenly on both sides of your body, which is essential for symmetry in cheerleading skills. This symmetry is important not just aesthetically but also functionally, as it allows for balanced force distribution during jumps and while performing stunts.

Pancake Stretch: A pancake stretch is an intensive stretch that has you sit on the ground with your legs spread wide and fold your torso forward. This deep forward fold engages your hamstrings and adductors significantly, which are muscle groups integral to high kicks, jumps, and various stunts. The stretch can help increase your range of motion, making your movements look more effortless and polished.

pancake stretch
cheerleading stretches

In your routine, these stretches should be complemented with a warm-up to prepare your muscles, and possibly followed by a cool-down to aid recovery. A balanced approach to stretching not only enhances flexibility but also helps in injury prevention, ensuring that you can perform cheerleading routines with both vigor and longevity

Additional Stretching Tips:

  • For hip flexibility, consider pigeon poses and butterfly stretches.
  • Incorporate shoulder stretches and arm circles to enhance arm mobility.
  • Consistency is key. Stretch daily, holding each stretch for at least 30 seconds.
  • Warm up before stretching to prevent injuries.
  • Incorporate dynamic stretching to simulate cheer movements.

Regaining flexibility is a journey that requires dedication, consistency, and the right techniques. By incorporating these stretches and following a disciplined approach, you’ll see improvement in your flexibility, performance, and confidence at tryouts

ithaca-college-cheer-underdog-win-story

Ithaca College

The story of the Ithaca College cheerleading team embodies the true essence of an underdog’s journey in the competitive cheerleading arena. With no coach just before the preseason and limited resources as a club sports team, they faced an uphill battle. The cheerleaders had to rely on their determination and creativity to raise the $35,000 needed just to attend the National Cheerleaders Association collegiate cheer championship in Daytona.

Their coach, Alicia Trahan, was new to both Ithaca and the cheerleading scene at the college level. With her background in cheer from Baylor University, where she was a cheerleader on a varsity team, Alicia had to adapt quickly to the club sport environment where everything from practice clothes to competition fees required self-funding.

Despite these challenges, the team’s perseverance and unity were evident. They spent months perfecting their routine, with athletes like Rochelle MacNeil transitioning from base to flyer, facing and overcoming the daunting fear of flying. Emma Schaefer, another flyer, had to conquer her nerves to execute flawless flips during their routine. These personal battles were a microcosm of the team’s larger struggle, emblematic of the underdog spirit that drove them forward.

As the team prepared for their performance in Albany, they encountered further setbacks with injuries and last-minute lineup changes. Alicia’s decision to rest an injured cheerleader in anticipation of the main event in Daytona and to bring in a former team member, Alex Sprague, to fill in showed the agility and leadership necessary to navigate the tumultuous waters of competitive cheerleading. The adaptability and quick learning of athletes like Alex, who seamlessly integrated back into the team, underscored the resilience and resourcefulness characteristic of underdog teams.

In Albany, the Ithaca College cheerleading team’s performance, against all odds, was their best yet, culminating in a first-place victory that left the team in disbelief. Their win was a testament to their hard work, a well-deserved reward for their dedication and spirit. The team’s joyous celebration upon receiving the black banner reading “First Place” was a poignant moment, highlighting not only their triumph over adversity but also the unity and strength that had developed among them.

It’s not just about the stunts and the competitions; it’s about the journey, the struggles, and the collective heart of a team that refuses to give up, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The Ithaca College cheerleading team’s story is a powerful narrative of resilience and determination that serves as inspiration for any team facing long odds.

Team Australia

Team Australia’s cheerleading squads, comprised of the nation’s finest cheerleaders, made a historic mark at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida. The All Girl team from Australia was crowned WORLD CHAMPIONS, marking the first year Australia has ever won the ICU World Cheerleading Championship title. Their victory is a significant achievement, demonstrating Australia’s rise as a competitive force in a sport long dominated by the United States. The coed team also won a silver medal, further solidifying Australia’s status as global contenders.

What makes their victory even more remarkable is the preparation that went into it. The teams had only three training camp weekends in Australia and just three practice sessions the week before the competition in the USA. To not only put together a routine of such high caliber but also to execute it to a level worthy of top spots at Worlds is an extraordinary feat. Derrick Turner, the head coach of Team Australia – All Girl, expressed immense pride in achieving the goal of being crowned world champions. Eddie Davey, the head coach of Team Australia – Coed Elite, commended the athletes and coaches for reaching a level of excellence previously unseen in their country.

This story is a testament to the underdog spirit, showcasing that with hard work, unity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, even teams from smaller cheerleading communities can ascend to the top of the world stage. Team Australia’s victory will undoubtedly inspire cheerleaders around the globe and serve as a powerful example of what can be accomplished when teams dare to dream big and work tirelessly to turn those dreams into reality.

Bangkok University

The Bangkok University cheerleading team, an underdog group from Thailand, carved out their place in cheerleading history with a story that reads like a script from a feel-good sports movie. Their journey, encapsulated in the documentary film “The Cheer Ambassadors,” is a testament to the spirit and determination of a team that wasn’t expected to rise to the top.

In 2011, the team achieved what many thought was impossible for a squad from a country where Western-style cheerleading was introduced in only 1995; they shared the gold medal with the US team at the Cheerleading Worlds, a feat that would put them on the world cheerleading map. This achievement followed their previous success at the 2009 ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, where they earned a silver medal, an accolade they repeated two years later.

Luke Cassady-Dorion, the director of the documentary and an American living in Thailand, was inspired to tell their story after learning of their hardships and triumphs. The Thai team started from scratch, their practice fueled by watching ESPN and YouTube clips, rehearsing from 6 pm to 6 am to adapt to the US timezone. The team’s creativity and ‘sanook’ (fun) approach to cheerleading were their strongest suits, compensating for their physical disadvantages compared to American athletes. Instead of relying on brute strength, the Thai team focused on building intricate pyramids that required immense teamwork.

The underdog story of the Bangkok University cheerleading team is not just a sports narrative but also a cultural one. They disproved the notion that Thais could not excel as a team and brought a unique Thai spirit to the global stage. Their story is one of unity, creativity, and relentless pursuit of excellence against all odds.

This extraordinary journey from underdogs to world champions is a powerful reminder that passion, teamwork, and innovation can defy expectations, inspiring cheerleading squads everywhere to reach for greatness, no matter their beginnings.

The chronicles of Ithaca College, Team Australia, and Bangkok University’s cheerleading teams embody the quintessential underdog story. Each team’s path to success — whether at national competitions, the ICU World Championships, or other international contests — showcases the incredible feats that can be achieved through perseverance and team spirit.

Their stories remind us that in the competitive world of cheer, the heart and hustle often shine brighter than trophies and titles. As these teams have proven, with the right blend of dedication, teamwork, and innovation, even the most unheralded squads can ascend to the pinnacle of cheer excellence, inspiring athletes and audiences alike with their remarkable journeys from the sidelines to the center stage of victory.

Revolutionizing Cheer: The Impact of OnForm, VisualEyes, TeamSnap, and CheerLife Pro+ on Cheerleading Practices

Revolutionizing-Cheer-Impact-of-OnForm,-VisualEyes,-TeamSnap,-CheerLifePro-on-Cheerleading-Practices

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 8, 2023

In the spotlight of competitive arenas, cheer teams bring more than just dynamic choreography and spirited chants; they bring a technological edge that transforms practice into perfection. As the sport evolves, so does the integration of cutting-edge tools designed to sharpen skills, enhance team coordination, and ensure safety. From video analysis to team management platforms, let’s explore the digital allies of today’s cheer squads.

Cheerleading-Software

Video Analysis: Coach’s Eye in Action

First, TechSmith has announced the retirement of their Coach’s Eye app and services. The decision to retire the app followed a one-year grace period that began on September 14, 2021, and lasted until September 15, 2022, during which the app and services were fully supported. The company cited the substantial ongoing development required to keep the app and associated web service relevant and technologically current as the reason for its retirement. Instead of continuing to invest in Coach’s Eye, TechSmith has chosen to direct their resources towards other growing areas within the company.

So that sucks.  But wait…there’s more!

There are new options! Let’s start with OnForm, this iOS app is like having a techy assistant coach. It’s awesome for giving feedback with slow-mo replays and drawing right on the video to highlight what needs work. And the best part? Coaches can chat with their athletes right in the app, using voice or text, making it super easy to stay connected and improve together, whether they’re across the gym or across the country.

Over on Android, VisualEyes is making waves. Created by a coach, this app gets what coaches need. It’s got all these nifty tools like zooming in while recording and a brand-new timer tool, perfect for nailing timing in routines. Plus, it’s got an angle tool that’s just the ticket for those tricky stunts that need to be spot-on.

Both these apps are all about making your cheer routines sharper and safer. They bring the kind of detail that can really up your cheer game. Whether it’s OnForm or VisualEyes, they’re here to help coaches and athletes rock their routines with style and precision.

But TeamSnap’s capabilities extend beyond mere scheduling. It’s a repository for shared resources, including routines, music mixes, and training videos. Nutrition and physical well-being are just as critical as practice. TeamSnap acknowledges this by providing tools to manage nutrition plans. Coaches can share guidelines on diet, hydration, and rest, tailored to the demands of your athletes. This holistic approach ensures that cheerleaders are not only well-practiced but also well-nourished.

Cheerleading-Practice-Apps

The app also offers messaging that keep everyone connected; private messaging for one-on-one conversations or group forums for team announcements. This constant line of communication fosters a sense of community and support among team members, which is essential for building trust and camaraderie.

Furthermore, the inclusivity of TeamSnap is notable. It offers accessibility across devices, ensuring that each team member, regardless of their technological proficiency or device preference, can stay in the loop. This inclusivity strengthens the team’s unity, as no one is left behind in the digital divide.

In essence, TeamSnap is not just an app; it’s the digital embodiment of a cheer coach’s strategy board, a planner, and a team huddle—all wrapped into one. Guide to Syncing your Cheer Music with your Choreography: Tips for Cheer Coaches

By Steve Pawlyk

Published November 2, 2023

Music and choreography go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. However, seamlessly integrating the two can be a daunting task for many cheer coaches. So, what are the key elements to consider while aligning cheer music with choreography? How can one make the most of every beat, lyric, and musical transition? This comprehensive guide aims to answer these questions and more, making your life as a cheer coach just a little bit easier.

Understanding the Basics of Cheer Music: The Four Pillars

Mastering the art of synchronizing cheer music with choreography begins with understanding the underlying structure and nuances of the music itself. As a cheer coach, being well-versed in these fundamentals can significantly elevate your team’s performance. Let’s break down these core aspects one by one.

cheerleading-music-choreography

Musical Structure: The Backbone of Your Routine

In a typical cheer mix, you’ll usually find the following sections:

  • Intro: This section sets the tone for your entire performance. You can think of it as a hook that grabs the audience’s attention. Choreography in this section should be compelling but not give everything away just yet.
  • Cheer: This is the heart of your routine where you can incorporate most of your stunts, tumbles, and jumps. It’s the high-energy section that showcases your team’s athleticism and skill.
  • Dance: Here’s where you get to show off your team’s creativity and synchronization. Dance sections usually allow for artistic expression, so don’t shy away from experimenting with formations and styles.
  • Outro: This is your last impression on the judges and audience, so make it count. A well-thought-out outro can tie your entire performance together and leave a lasting impact.

Understanding these sections helps in mapping out your choreography in a structured manner, ensuring that you maximize the impact of each part of your routine.

Beats and Counts: The Language of Precision

8-counts are to cheerleading what alphabets are to language. These are the building blocks that will guide your choreography. In an 8-count structure, each count corresponds to a particular movement, position, or transition.

  • Syncing with Music: Always ensure that your 8-count sheets are perfectly in sync with the music. For instance, a high-flying stunt could coincide with a climactic musical note for added dramatic effect.
  • Uniformity: Consistency in counts ensures that the entire team moves as a single unit. Even a half-count off can be noticeable and cost you valuable points.

Lyrics and Voiceovers: The Signposts of Your Routine

Customized cheer music often includes personalized lyrics and voiceovers that can serve as auditory cues for your team. For example, if your team name or a specific word is echoed, that could signal the beginning of a new formation or stunt.

  • Internal Cues: These voiceovers can serve as internal cues for your team, keeping everyone on track during the routine.
  • Audience Engagement: Clever use of voiceovers can also engage the audience and get them excited, especially if they’re designed to be interactive or catchy.

Genre and Mood: Matching the Vibe of Your Team

The genre and mood of the music should mirror the essence of your team and the message you want to convey. If your team excels in powerful, high-energy routines, a fast-paced pop or electronic song could be ideal. Alternatively, if your routine has a storyline or a thematic element, a slower, more dramatic piece might be more suitable.

  • Audience Resonance: Choose a genre that not only suits your team but also resonates with your target audience. Sometimes, familiarity with the genre can evoke emotional engagement, adding another layer of impact to your performance.
  • Mood Transitions: If your routine includes different moods or narratives, consider using a multi-genre mix that transitions smoothly to tell your story effectively.

By mastering these four pillars of cheer music—Musical Structure, Beats and Counts, Lyrics and Voiceovers, and Genre and Mood—you’ll be well-equipped to design a routine that’s not just synchronized but also sensational.

Know Your Team’s Skill Level

Evaluating your team’s skill level is paramount when syncing music with choreography. Here’s how to go about it:

  • Identify Strengths and Weaknesses: Is your team excellent at tumbles but not so great at stunts? Use this information to highlight their strengths in the routine.
  • Complexity vs Simplicity: For novice teams, sticking to simpler choreography and musical elements is advised. Advanced teams can experiment with complex transitions and tricks.
  • Customization: Many services, like IPP Music, offer customized cheer music tailored to your team’s capabilities, ensuring a perfect match between music and moves.

Choosing the Right Tempo

A significant aspect to consider is the tempo of your cheer music. This will highly influence the pace and energy of your choreography.

  • Fast Tempo: Ideal for routines that require high energy and rapid movements.
  • Medium Tempo: Great for a balanced routine with a mix of stunts, jumps, and dance elements.
  • Slow Tempo: Suitable for dramatic, story-telling routines with intricate moves and stunts.

Mapping Out Your Routine

Once you have the basics down, you’ll want to start mapping out your routine, including:

  • Sequence Planning: Decide the order in which elements like tumbles, jumps, and stunts will appear in your routine.
  • Transitions: Plan transitions carefully. Good transitions are as important as the stunts or tumbles themselves.
  • Musical Cues: Make use of the built-in cues in your music to signal the start or end of specific elements.

Key Choreography Tips

  • Musicality: Aim to make your moves flow naturally with the music. Each beat, rhythm, and lyric should have a corresponding move or emotion.
  • Timing: Ensure that your team can execute moves within the timeframe of the music segments. Practicing with a metronome can be beneficial.
  • Variety: Add a mix of elements to keep the audience engaged. Variety is the spice of a winning routine!

How to Practice Effectively

Effective practice is the key to a flawless performance. Here are some tips:

  • Start Slow: Begin by practicing individual elements separately before combining them.
  • Record and Review: Record your practice sessions to identify areas of improvement.
  • Repetition: Consistency is key. The more your team practices, the more muscle memory they’ll build, making it easier to sync with the music.

Integrating cheer music and choreography is not just an art but also a science that requires meticulous planning and practice. By understanding the basics of cheer music, assessing your team’s skill level, choosing an appropriate tempo, and employing smart choreography tips, you can create a performance that is not just synchronized but also sensational.

I hope this guide has been helpful in answering some of the common questions cheer coaches have regarding cheer music and choreography. For customized cheer music to match your choreography needs, consider IPP Music  :)

Creating a Legacy: How to Build a Long-Lasting Cheer Program

Creating-a-Legacy--How-to-Build-a-Long-Lasting-Cheer-Program

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 24, 2023

In cheer, fleeting moments of victory are not enough. What distinguishes an extraordinary cheer program from an average one is the legacy it leaves behind. This legacy is built on a combination of consistent excellence, impactful leadership, and a well-rounded approach to all aspects of the sport and community. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore key elements that go into establishing and maintaining a long-lasting cheer program that will be talked about for generations to come.

cheerleading-gym-financial-stability

Laying the Foundation

Craft a Mission Statement

The importance of a well-crafted mission statement cannot be overstated. It serves as the philosophical backbone of your cheer program, highlighting your core values, goals, and visions. Involve your coaching staff, athletes, and even parents in this process to get diverse input. For example, your mission statement might read, “To empower young athletes to achieve excellence in sport and character, fostering a lifelong love for cheerleading.” Once created, make sure this statement is visible in your gym, on your website, and in any printed materials to continually remind everyone involved of your program’s core aims.

Build a Strong Team Culture

A team’s culture can make or break a cheer program. You need to establish a culture that celebrates each athlete’s unique strengths while fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Host team-building activities regularly, whether it’s a weekend training camp or simple ice-breaker games during practice. Also, make time to celebrate birthdays, academic achievements, and other life milestones to show that you care about your athletes’ lives outside of the gym. This kind of nurturing environment is key for long-term retention and success.

Setting Clear Objectives

Short-term Goals

Short-term goals offer immediate targets that keep everyone engaged and focused. These could range from perfecting a specific routine for an upcoming competition to improving the squad’s average jump height over a semester. Keep these goals SMART—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Track these metrics diligently and celebrate when they are achieved to keep morale high.

Long-term Goals

These are your legacy-building milestones. It could be winning a national championship within the next five years or perhaps getting your program recognized as a breeding ground for college-level talent. Once set, break these long-term objectives down into smaller, achievable steps and assign them deadlines. This makes the journey less overwhelming and more manageable.

Effective Coaching

Credentials and Training

Your coaching staff should not only have the relevant qualifications and experience but also a commitment to ongoing education. Consider investing in regular workshops or training sessions on the latest cheer techniques, sports psychology, and even first aid. Moreover, having a coaching staff that is well-versed in contemporary cheerleading dynamics adds significant credibility to your program.

Communication

Establishing open lines of communication is crucial for a successful cheer program. Use multiple channels like emails, group chats, and face-to-face meetings to keep everyone in the loop. Keep parents informed about practice schedules, competition dates, and any updates or changes. The key is to be transparent and accessible, which fosters a culture of trust.

Recruitment and Retention

Scouting Talent

Talent is the lifeblood of any cheer program. Utilize local competitions, school events, and social media platforms to scout promising athletes. Consider hosting an annual open house where potential recruits can visit your facilities, meet the coaching staff, and even participate in a mini training session.

Retaining Athletes

To keep your talented athletes committed to your program, provide them with the resources they need to succeed, both in and out of competitions. This could include scholarships, advanced training facilities, or even academic support. Conduct regular check-ins with your athletes to understand their needs and concerns, and be prepared to adapt your approach accordingly.

Financial Stability

Fundraising and Sponsorships

Finances can be a major stumbling block for long-term success. Host regular fundraising events like car washes, bake sales, or even cheer clinics where community members pay a small fee for a short cheerleading lesson. Furthermore, don’t hesitate to approach local businesses for sponsorships; offer to promote their business at your events or on your uniforms as a quid pro quo.

Budget Management

Managing your budget wisely is critical. Designate funds for essential activities like training, uniforms, travel, and equipment maintenance, and always have a contingency fund. Utilize financial software or hire an accountant who specializes in sports programs to keep your finances in check.

Community Involvement

Host Events

Hosting events, from small community gatherings to large-scale competitions, will raise your program’s profile. These events not only provide additional fundraising opportunities but also help in building a strong network within the cheerleading community.

cheer-program-mission-statement

Volunteer Work

Community service is not just for show; it helps your athletes develop a well-rounded character. Whether it’s visiting local hospitals in your cheer uniforms to bring some joy to patients or participating in community clean-up projects, these activities instill a sense of responsibility and belonging among your athletes.

Alumni Engagement

Networking

Engage with your alumni regularly. They can offer invaluable mentorship opportunities for your current athletes and can even help in job placements post-graduation. Create an alumni newsletter to keep them updated about the program and invite them to special events.

Fundraising

Alumni are often willing to contribute to their alma mater’s continued success. Regularly share your program’s achievements and milestones with them, and don’t hesitate to set up an alumni donation fund. Even small contributions can add up and make a significant difference.

Staying Updated

Techniques and Trends

Cheerleading is an evolving sport. Attend coaching seminars, subscribe to relevant publications, and watch popular cheer shows or competitions to stay up-to-date. Updating your techniques not only keeps your program competitive but also keeps your athletes engaged and excited to learn.

Equipment and Safety

Regularly assess and update your equipment. Your athletes’ safety is paramount, and using outdated or faulty equipment is a risk that no program can afford to take. Keep up with safety protocols and ensure your coaching staff is well-versed in them as well.

Building a legacy with a long-lasting cheer program requires a deep-rooted commitment to excellence in every aspect—be it coaching, athlete development, or community engagement. Remember, the path to a lasting legacy is a marathon, not a sprint. With the right strategies and unwavering dedication, you can transform your cheer program into a name that will be remembered for years to come. Are you up for the challenge? Your legacy starts today.

The Comprehensive Guide to Stunt Progressions for Cheer Coaches

The Comprehensive Guide to Stunt Progressions for Cheer Coaches

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 18, 2023

Today we’ll delve into the science of stunting, the psychology of team dynamics, and the art of performance, offering you actionable insights to elevate your squad to unparalleled heights.

Stunt-Progressions

Why Stunt Progressions Are Not Just for Rookies

While it’s easy to associate stunt progressions with beginner levels, even the most accomplished teams can benefit from revisiting these foundational building blocks. However, for the advanced team, the approach shouldn’t be repetitive but rather analytical. Here’s why:

  • Risk Mitigation: A nuanced understanding of each progression allows coaches to pinpoint minor, often overlooked errors that could spell disaster in complex stunts.
  • Skill Specialization: Mastering the nuances of each progression enables athletes to specialize in their roles, which in turn significantly improves individual and team performance.
  • Performance Metrics: Leveraging tools like video analysis and biomechanics software allows coaches to optimize each movement, timing, and force, lending a scientific rigor to the art of cheerleading.

The Roles Re-Examined: More than Just Titles

In competitive cheerleading, roles are not just labels but encapsulate specific skill sets, expectations, and responsibilities that each team member must fulfill.

  • Flyer: At advanced levels, training should include vestibular exercises to improve body awareness, control, and mid-air adjustment skills. Psychological coaching can also be beneficial for managing performance anxiety.
  • Base: Specialized strength training regimes like plyometrics or isometric exercises can hone specific muscle groups that are vital for bases. Additionally, drills focusing on adaptive grip techniques can improve stunt stability.
  • Spotter: Rather than being passive overseers, spotters should engage in active problem-solving during stunts. Communication drills can help them deliver effective, real-time feedback and corrections.

Mastering the Nuances: Beyond Basic Skills

While basic stunts form the foundation of all cheerleading routines, mastering their intricacies can yield exponential performance improvements.

Prep-Level Stunts:

  • Thigh Stand with Core Activation: Incorporating core-engagement techniques can offer more stable thigh stands and can also improve the bases’ ability to adjust and adapt to movement variations from the flyer.

Extension-Level Stunts:

  • Full Extension with Synchronized Breathing: Introduce meditative breathing exercises to help your team focus. Synchronized breathing between the bases and the flyer can add an additional layer of stability and control.

Intermediate Skills: The Untold Tricks

These transitional stunts require a blend of solid foundational skills and advanced techniques, making them critical stepping stones for aspiring champions.

  • Bow and Arrow with Momentum Control: Emphasize the importance of core stability and dynamic balance to control momentum effectively. Advanced squads can also incorporate angular momentum calculations to improve performance.
  • Basket Toss with Aerial Awareness: Introduce visualization and spatial awareness drills that flyers can employ mid-air to adjust their body position for a safer and more precise landing.
cheer-coach-stunt-progressions

Elite Stunt Techniques: The Next Frontier

For squads ready to break barriers and defy gravity, these high-difficulty stunts provide the ultimate test of skill, teamwork, and courage.

  • Rewind with Pre-Lift Cues: Employ auditory or tactile cues to ensure the entire team is mentally and physically prepared to execute a rewind flawlessly.
  • Double Down with Angular Momentum Conservation: Advanced squads can use biomechanical analysis tools to evaluate the optimum rotational speed and body posture for executing a flawless Double Down.

Unseen Pitfalls Even Pros Should Avoid

Even seasoned coaches and elite athletes are susceptible to pitfalls. These are often due to overconfidence or complacency.

  • Overconfidence: Assuming that a mastery of the basics negates the need for revisiting them can be a grave mistake.
  • Technique Stagnation: The world of cheerleading is dynamic and rapidly evolving. Refusing to update and adapt your techniques to new standards and best practices can lead to performance plateaus.

Safety Measures for the Advanced

Even with advanced skills, safety remains paramount. From regular biomechanical assessments to sophisticated technologies like pressure-sensitive mats and motion capture, advanced safety measures are an investment in your team’s longevity and success.

Excellence in cheerleading stunting doesn’t come from mere repetition but from deep, insightful understanding and continuous innovation. This Advanced Guide to Stunt Progressions aims to catalyze your journey towards technical mastery, optimized performance, and world-class excellence.

Strength Training

Core Conditioning

The core is the foundation of almost all cheer movements. Top cheer athletes focus on exercises like planks, Russian twists, and V-ups to develop core stability and strength.

Upper Body Workouts

Push-ups, pull-ups, and weight training for the shoulders and arms are integral to a cheerleader’s workout routine. Strong arms and shoulders are essential for stunts and tumbles.

Lower Body Workouts

Squats, lunges, and calf raises are crucial for building leg strength. This helps with jumps, tumbles, and lifts.

Cardio and Endurance

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and aerobic exercises such as running, cycling, and swimming are commonly incorporated to improve stamina.

Flexibility Training

Static and Dynamic Stretching

Both forms of stretching are essential for cheer athletes. While static stretching helps in muscle recovery and flexibility, dynamic stretching is more about preparing the muscles for high-impact routines.

Yoga and Pilates

These are becoming increasingly popular for enhancing flexibility and mindfulness.

Skill-Specific Training

Tumbling Practice

From backflips to somersaults, specialized training sessions are a must.

Stunting Techniques

Training includes not just lifting and flying, but also intricate dismounts and catches.

Dance Routines

Precision and synchronization are crucial. Hence, cheer athletes spend significant time perfecting their dance movements.

Micronutrients

Vitamins and minerals are equally important. Leafy greens, fruits, and supplements are often recommended.

Decoding Cheer Terminology: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners and Parents

Decoding-Cheer-Terminology--A-Comprehensive-Guide-for-Beginners-and-Parents

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 11, 2023

The world of cheer can be somewhat challenging, especially for those new to the scene. From unique terms, moves, and phrases, cheerleading, as a sport and art form, is replete with its own specialized language. In this comprehensive guide, we aim to break down and demystify this jargon for parents, beginners, and the curious.

1. The Origins of Cheerleading and its Jargon

Cheerleading originated in the late 19th century as an all-male activity. Over the years, it evolved and incorporated more gymnastic elements, leading to the creation of specific terms to describe stunts, moves, and formations. As the sport grew in complexity and popularity, so did its lexicon.

cheerleading-lingo-slang

2. Basics: Core Terms Every Cheer Enthusiast Should Know

Flyer: The essence of acrobatic elegance in cheerleading. Being a flyer requires not only physical strength but also immense trust in the team. Elevating or being tossed into the air demands a blend of balance, confidence, and precision. The flyer’s role, though breathtaking, requires hours of practice to ensure every move exudes grace and poise.

Base: Often unsung heroes of cheerleading, bases are the foundation of most stunts. These individuals, usually with exceptional strength and stability, are tasked with the crucial job of supporting or elevating the flyer. The synchronization between bases ensures fluidity in routines and, more importantly, the safety of the flyer.

Spotter: The guardians of the cheer world. Their primary role is to ensure that no harm comes to the flyer. By being vigilant and having a keen eye for potential hazards, spotters play an instrumental role in preventing injuries and ensuring that routines are executed safely.

Routine: More than just a series of moves, a routine is a story told through synchronized dance, tumbling, stunts, and jumps. Choreographing a routine requires understanding the strengths of each team member and ensuring every movement complements the next, creating a seamless visual spectacle.

3. Deciphering Stunts and Moves

Liberty (Lib): A testament to balance and strength. This stunt demands that the flyer showcases their stability by maintaining a pose on one foot, elevated by the base. The aesthetics of the Lib are amplified by the free leg’s positioning, making it a favorite in many routines.

Basket Toss: A combination of trust and thrill. The bases use their collective strength to propel the flyer into the air. While airborne, the flyer has a brief moment to exhibit a series of tricks, spins, or poses before descending into the secure embrace of their team.

Full: An embodiment of rotational elegance. Executing a full requires the cheerleader to harness momentum and perform a complete 360-degree twist in the air. Mastery of this move is a testament to a cheerleader’s tumbling prowess.

Tick-Tock: A transition that requires impeccable timing. As the flyer switches their weight from one foot to the other, the bases and spotters must adjust in perfect harmony. The beauty of the Tick-Tock lies in its fluidity and synchronization.

4. Navigating the Competitive Arena

Zero Deductions: Every cheerleader’s dream. Achieving zero deductions signifies a routine executed to perfection. It’s a reflection of countless hours of practice, team synchronization, and flawless execution.

Full Out: The climax of preparation. In the final rehearsals leading up to a competition, athletes push their boundaries, performing routines with unmatched energy and intensity. This not only prepares them for the main event but also helps iron out any remaining imperfections.

Mat: More than just a surface. The mat is a testament to the evolution of cheerleading. Designed to aid athletes in maximizing their performance while ensuring safety, its spring-loaded mechanism is pivotal in enhancing jumps and cushioning falls.

cheerleading-lingo-slang

5. Delving Deeper: Cheer Slang and Insider Lingo

Cupie: A picturesque pose that showcases the synergy between a flyer and their base. Achieving the Cupie requires the base to display immense strength and stability, allowing the flyer to strike a balanced pose on one foot high in the air.

Crisping: The art of refinement. As teams approach competition day, every gesture, move, and formation is reviewed and refined. This process ensures that routines are not just technically sound, but also aesthetically pleasing.

Choreo: The heart and soul of any routine. Choreography sessions are a blend of creativity and athleticism. It’s during these sessions that routines come to life, with every move meticulously planned to ensure visual appeal and team synchronization.

6. Essential Tips for Parents and Newbies

a. Immerse Yourself: The world of cheerleading is vast and vibrant. To truly understand its intricacies, one must dive deep. Engaging with dedicated platforms, such as this blog, provides insights, stories, and experiences that will help you understand the cheer world.

b. Active Observation: There’s a difference between watching and observing. By actively analyzing routines, newbies can begin to understand the technicalities of moves, the importance of synchronization, and the sheer effort that goes into every performance.

c. Network: The cheer community is vast and usually very supportive. By connecting with seasoned parents, experienced cheerleaders, and dedicated coaches, newcomers can gain invaluable insights, tips, and advice that can help navigate the initial stages of their cheer journey. Look for facebook groups centered around the gym you or your child is in or groups that are just cheer focused.  You can glean a lot from just viewing discussions between seasoned cheer people who know what they’re talking about.

Understanding the language is the first step in appreciating the dedication and passion of cheer. Every jump, tumble, and stunt is a story waiting to be told. So, immerse yourself, observe, learn, and above all, keep reaching for zero!

How to Prepare Your Team for NCA Nationals: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Prepare Your Team for NCA Nationals: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Steve Pawlyk

Published October 10, 2023

For collegiate cheerleading teams, the NCA Nationals in Daytona isn’t just a competition—it’s a rite of passage. Held during the first week of April, it’s a convergence of talent, where teams like Navarro, OSU, and TVCC have consistently set high standards. As we approach this pinnacle of cheerleading prowess, it’s essential to arm your team with the right strategies. Here’s a detailed roadmap.

Cheerleading-Nationals-Preparation

1. Proactive Planning

Evaluate Your Squad’s Capacities: In the vast realm of collegiate cheerleading, each squad has its strengths and unique attributes. Dive deep into introspection. While Navarro might be known for their dynamic formations and TVCC for their impeccable synchronization, what can your team bring to the table? Dissect your previous performances. Identify areas of brilliance and zones that need more dedication.

Chalk Out a Precise Timeline: With the Nationals set in April, every preceding month has its importance:

  • January: Establish foundational routines, focusing on team dynamics.
  • February: This should be your intensive training phase—longer practices, dedicated workshops, and more.
  • March: Refinement. Constant feedback, adjustments, and mental conditioning. Also, allocate time for relaxation to prevent burnout.

2. Studying the Titans: Learn from the Best

Analyze Past Performances of Powerhouses: Platforms like YouTube provide ample footage from past NCA Nationals. Study them. What made Navarro’s pyramid formation so awe-inspiring last year? How did OSU’s flyers manage such gravity-defying stunts with impeccable grace? Make these sessions interactive—discuss with your team, note observations, and brainstorm.

Introduce Fresh Elements: While emulating the greats provides a foundation, innovation captures attention. Drawing inspiration from giants like OSU and Navarro is beneficial, but adding your squad’s unique essence ensures your performance is memorable and stands out.

3. Intensive Training Regime

Augment Practice Hours: As the Nationals loom closer, your team’s training regimen should mirror the intensity of the impending competition. Gradually increase practice hours, ensuring every team member is comfortable and not overwhelmed. The goal is perfection, but also ensuring the mental and physical well-being of your squad.

Holistic Conditioning: Beyond routines, focus on overall conditioning:

  • Physical: Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular workouts, strength training, and flexibility exercises. These not only enhance performance but also reduce the risk of injuries.
  • Mental: Psychological resilience is equally paramount. Techniques like meditation, group discussions, and even professional counseling sessions can bolster mental strength.

4. Understanding Daytona-specific Dynamics

Venue Familiarization: The environment plays a crucial role. If feasible, arrange for a reconnaissance trip to the venue. Acquaint your team with the surroundings. The ambiance, floor material, acoustic dynamics—all can influence performance. Early familiarization reduces the ‘unknown’ factor, providing a psychological edge.

Weather Preparations: Daytona’s weather in April can be a mixed bag. Plan for contingencies. Whether it’s ensuring your costumes are adaptable to unexpected cold spells or prepping the team for potential humidity—every detail counts.

5. Visualization: The Power of Mind

Picture the Win: Visualization is a potent tool, used by athletes worldwide. Encourage your team to imagine every aspect of their performance—from their entrance, key stunts, to the final bow. But also, have them visualize the euphoria of a perfect performance, the applause, the accolades.

Detailed Imagery Sessions: Organize dedicated visualization sessions. Dim the lights, play soft background music, and guide your team through a mental rehearsal of their routine. This aids in muscle memory and confidence.

6. Costumes and Props: More than Aesthetics

Prioritize Costume Trials: While costumes add visual appeal, they need to be functional. Organize multiple trial sessions. Ensure the fabric, fit, and design are conducive to the strenuous routines. Remember, a wardrobe malfunction or an uncomfortable costume can disrupt performance.

Prop Quality and Integration: For routines that utilize props, they should seamlessly integrate into the performance. Ensure their quality, stability, and functionality. Regular checks and rehearsals with props are essential to ensure they complement rather than hinder the performance.

7. Engage Alumni and Seek Expert Insights

Leverage Alumni Experience: Your predecessors have trodden the path you’re embarking upon. Engage with them. Their experiences, insights, and feedback can be invaluable. Whether it’s advice on handling the pressure, tips on impressing the judges, or even insights into competitors, they’re a goldmine of information

So, as we inch closer to that big week in April, remember: prepping for the NCA Nationals in Daytona isn’t just about nailing those routines. It’s about team spirit, clever strategy, and a whole lot of heart. Teams like Navarro, OSU, and TVCC? They’ve set the bar high, but every year is a new game, and there’s always room at the top. With the right prep, determination, and that special something only your team has, who’s to say you won’t be the next big thing? Let’s gear up, give it our all, and make some unforgettable memories
